New Delhi, September 6: Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is currently undergoing treatment for a severe lung infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The 72-year-old veteran leader had been admitted to the hospital on August 19 due to a high fever, and was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for specialized care. However, according to the latest official update from the CPI(M), Yechury’s condition is now stable, and he is responding positively to the treatment.

CPI(M) Provides Health Update

In an official statement released on Friday, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) assured the public that Yechury is receiving proper medical attention and his health is improving. The statement read: “Comrade Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has been under treatment in the intensive care unit of AIIMS, New Delhi. He is being treated for a severe lung infection. There is a positive response to the treatment, and Comrade Sitaram’s condition is stable.”

While the party has not disclosed the specific nature of his illness, it has been confirmed that Yechury was admitted to AIIMS following a period of high fever. His health required intensive care, and the team of specialists at the hospital has been monitoring his condition closely.

Yechury’s Recent Health and Activities

This hospitalization comes shortly after Yechury underwent cataract surgery earlier this year. Despite his recent health challenges, the veteran leader has remained active in his political role. On August 22, Yechury released a heartfelt video message on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), expressing his grief over the passing of Buddhadev Bhattacharya, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal. In the six-minute video, Yechury lamented his inability to attend Bhattacharya’s memorial in person due to his own medical treatment at AIIMS.

“It’s my loss that I was not able to physically attend this memorial meeting and pay my homage to Comrade Buddhadev Bhattacharya. It’s unfortunate that I had to connect from AIIMS to convey my feelings and revolutionary Lal Salaam to Buddho da,” Yechury said in his message.

Continued Political Engagement

Even while being treated, Yechury remained engaged in political developments. On August 23, he posted a message of solidarity between the CPI(M), Congress, and the National Conference (NC) in preparation for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He had also been active as recently as August 29, posting his condolences for the passing of his close friend, Abdul Ghafoor Noorani, an eminent constitutional and legal scholar.

In his tribute, Yechury wrote: “Deeply grieved at the passing away of Abdul Ghafoor Noorani, an extraordinary intellect of constitutional and legal matters. He invited me and fed me Biriyani that he made at his flat in Mumbai way back in 1993 after reading my small pamphlet ‘What is this Hindu Rashtra’ – an expose of Golwalkar’s ideology. Since then, Ghafoor has been a close friend. Deepest condolences to his family members and friends.”

Positive Outlook

With the CPI(M) confirming Yechury’s gradual recovery, party members and supporters have expressed relief over the positive turn in his health. The party, however, has yet to provide a timeline for his discharge from the hospital. In the meantime, the political veteran is expected to continue his recovery under the careful supervision of medical experts at AIIMS.

Yechury’s health update has been closely followed by his supporters and the larger political community, given his pivotal role in Indian politics and his leadership within the CPI(M).
