New Delhi: The Congress party has issued a three-line whip to all its MPs, directing them to be present in the Lok Sabha on June 26 for the election of the Speaker. This election is scheduled to take place during the special session of Parliament on Wednesday.
In a letter from the Congress Parliamentary Party, MPs were informed, “A very important issue will be brought to the Lok Sabha tomorrow. All the members of the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha are requested to please remain present in the House from 11 a.m. till the adjournment of the House. This message should be considered very important.”
K Suresh, who is the opposition’s candidate for the Speaker position, issued the whip on behalf of the Congress. Similarly, the BJP has also directed all its MPs to attend the session on Wednesday for the election.
This will be the first contested election for the Lok Sabha Speaker since 1952. Om Birla from the NDA will face K. Suresh of the I.N.D.I.A block. Initially, there seemed to be an agreement between the BJP-led NDA and the opposition for the Speaker’s post. However, the opposition’s demand for the Deputy Speaker position, which was rejected by the NDA, led to the breakdown of consensus.
