Kolkata :- Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a distinguished judge at the Calcutta High Court, has declared his intention to resign from his position on Tuesday. Justice Gangopadhyay, known for presiding over several sensitive cases in the state, including the cash-for-school job case, revealed his decision in an interview with a vernacular channel on Sunday. He expressed his intention to submit his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, citing his desire to engage in a “larger sphere” of activities.
During the interview, Justice Gangopadhyay hinted at the possibility of entering politics, stating, “If I join any political party and if they nominate me, I will surely consider that decision.”
Justice Gangopadhyay, who was scheduled to retire from judicial services in August 2024, is currently overseeing cases related to labour affairs and industrial relations. His resignation comes amidst a scathing attack against the ruling Trinamool Congress party, accusing them of rampant corruption. “The state is going through an extremely bad phase. A rule of theft and loot is going on here. As a Bengali, I am unable to accept it. I do not think that the current rulers of the state can do any good for the people,” Justice Gangopadhyay remarked.
He further stated that the challenge presented by the ruling dispensation played a significant role in his decision to resign. “I would like to thank the ruling party for this challenge,” he added.
