0

Hathras, Uttar Pradesh – In a devastating accident on National Highway 93, 15 people, including four women and four children, lost their lives when a state roadways bus collided with the van they were traveling in. The collision occurred on Friday near Kanwarpur village, about 10 km from Hathras district headquarters.

The accident took place when the bus, attempting to overtake the van, rammed into it on the busy Agra-Aligarh national highway, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Nipun Agarwal. Thirteen additional passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby government hospital for treatment.

Immediate Government Response

Taking swift action, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed district officials to visit the accident site immediately and oversee the relief operations. The Chief Minister also instructed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured victims.

In his statement, CM Adityanath announced a financial aid package, pledging Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those who were critically injured.

Prime Minister and President Offer Condolences

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families, also announcing an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. PM Modi stated on X (formerly Twitter), “The local administration, under the guidance of the state government, is providing all possible assistance to the victims.”

President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her deep sorrow over the loss of lives, offering prayers for the quick recovery of those injured. In her statement on X, she remarked, “The news of the deaths in this road accident in Hathras is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the families, and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

Victims Identified

Authorities have identified the victims of the collision. Among the deceased are Irshad (25), Munne Khan (55), Muskan (16), Talli (28), Tabassum (28), Najma (25), Bhola (25), Khushbu (25), Jameel (50), Chote (25), Ayan (2), Sufiyan (1), Alfaz (6), Shoaib (5), and Ishrat (50).

Frequent Accidents on National Highways

This tragic incident is not an isolated one. National highways across India have been the site of numerous fatal accidents in recent years. Here are some past related incidents:

  • August 23, 2023 – In Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, a bus collided with a truck on National Highway 24, killing 10 people and injuring several others. The accident was blamed on poor visibility due to heavy rains and reckless driving.
  • July 17, 2022 – In Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, 12 people lost their lives in a horrific accident when a speeding truck collided with a van carrying pilgrims. The accident occurred on National Highway 7, raising concerns over unsafe driving practices.
  • December 25, 2021 – A major accident on Mumbai-Pune Expressway claimed 9 lives after a bus collided with a stationary truck. Investigation revealed that poor lighting and speeding were the primary causes of the incident.

These incidents have triggered renewed calls for stronger traffic enforcement, better road safety measures, and infrastructure improvements to curb the rising number of highway fatalities.

Public Demand for Accountability

As road accidents on national highways continue to claim lives, public outcry for accountability has intensified. With the Hathras accident once again highlighting the dangers of reckless driving and inadequate safety measures, experts are urging authorities to address these issues urgently.

As investigations into the Hathras accident continue, further steps are expected to be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.

“Loot Exposed: Road Construction Cost ₹1896 Crore, Toll Collection ₹8349 Crore, RTI Reveals”

0

New Delhi – A new debate on social media has erupted over toll collection after an RTI (Right to Information) inquiry revealed a massive disparity between the cost of building a national highway and the toll revenues it has generated. A national highway, constructed for ₹1896 crore, has accumulated a staggering ₹8349 crore in tolls, according to information disclosed through the RTI.

This disclosure, initially brought to light by a viewer of Aaj Tak’s program “Black & White,” has led to public outrage. The viewer, from Jaipur, Rajasthan, wrote to the program, sharing details about the Manoharpur toll plaza on the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-8). According to the viewer, toll collection at the plaza has continued for years, well after the construction costs were recovered.

RTI Details: Construction and Collection

RTI requests were submitted to obtain further details about the toll plazas along NH-8, specifically the Manoharpur toll, as well as the Shahjahanpur and Daulatpur toll plazas.

In response to the RTI, officials disclosed that toll collection on this highway began on April 3, 2009. The highway, which connects Gurugram to Kotputli and Jaipur in Rajasthan, was built at a total cost of ₹1896 crore. However, despite having recouped the construction cost, the toll has continued to be levied.

Shocking Revenue Figures

One of the most startling revelations was the toll revenue generated. By 2023, ₹8349 crore had been collected from just three toll plazas along the highway. To put this into perspective, experts have noted that the amount collected is enough to construct at least four similar highways connecting Gurugram to Jaipur.

Despite this, none of the toll plazas on this route have been closed, leading to growing frustration among motorists and taxpayers alike.

Public Outrage and Social Media Debate

As news of the RTI findings spread, social media platforms have been flooded with questions and criticisms. Many users have expressed disbelief over the continued toll collection despite the recovery of construction costs. Some are questioning why, after paying a one-time road tax when purchasing vehicles, motorists are still charged toll fees every 50 kilometers on major highways.

One social media user commented, “If this much toll is being collected from a single highway, imagine the profits being generated across all of India’s major highways. Why are we still paying tolls after the costs have been recovered?”

Another user highlighted the need for further investigations, suggesting that similar RTI queries for other national highways would likely reveal massive profits, well beyond the actual costs of construction. Some activists have even called for a reevaluation of toll policies, arguing that continued toll collection on highways that have long since recouped their costs constitutes exploitation of the public.

Government Accountability

Calls for government accountability are growing louder, with demands for clarity on why toll collections are not being capped or phased out once infrastructure projects are paid for. The RTI findings have brought to the forefront the broader issue of toll management in India and the need for transparent mechanisms to ensure fair practices in infrastructure projects.

As the toll debate intensifies, authorities are yet to respond to the public outcry. Meanwhile, calls for reform and policy changes to limit the duration of toll collection are gaining momentum.

The airline assured that all passengers would soon resume their journey and apologized for the unexpected delay.

Background

This incident marks a significant security scare for Vistara Airlines, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. The airline has been known for its strong operational standards, and this incident is being treated with utmost seriousness by both Vistara and Turkish security agencies.

This diversion follows global concerns regarding aviation security, with airlines increasingly alert to potential threats onboard. Authorities will likely continue their investigation into the source of the bomb threat, while Vistara is expected to conduct an internal review of the incident to prevent future occurrences.

New Delhi: The Indian National Congress on Friday released its first list of 31 candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, slated for October 5. The list features prominent figures such as former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who will contest from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, and Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Udai Bhan from Hodal. Notably, Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been fielded from the Julana constituency.

The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress finalized the candidate list during a meeting in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by key party leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi, General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal, AICC in-charge of Haryana Deepak Babaria, and Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Key Candidates and Constituencies

  • Bhupinder Singh Hooda: The two-time former Chief Minister aims to reclaim his seat in Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, a constituency he has represented multiple times.
  • Udai Bhan: The Haryana Congress chief will contest from Hodal, reinforcing the party’s focus on experienced leadership.
  • Vinesh Phogat: Making her political debut, the celebrated wrestler will stand from Julana, bringing a fresh face to the party’s lineup.
  • Mewa Singh: Fielded from Ladwa, he will challenge the incumbent Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
  • Other notable candidates include Surender Panwar (Sonipat), Bharat Bhushan Batra (Rohtak), Kuldeep Vats (Badli), Chiranjeev Rao (Rewari), and Neeraj Sharma (Faridabad NIT).

Alliance Talks with AAP

The Congress is engaged in ongoing seat-sharing negotiations with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). However, the prospects of a coalition appear slim as both parties have hardened their stances. Sources indicate that the Hooda faction and other senior leaders within the Congress are skeptical about an alliance, questioning AAP’s influence in Haryana.

Wrestlers Turn Politicians

Olympians Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who led the protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year, have joined the Congress. Punia has been appointed as the working chairman of the All India Kisan Congress, signaling the party’s intent to strengthen its appeal among farmers and youth. Given his new role, it is unlikely that Punia will contest in the elections.

Statements from Party Leaders

When asked about the possibility of Members of Parliament contesting in the Assembly elections, AICC in-charge Deepak Babaria stated, “To date, no MP has been permitted to contest Assembly elections.” Confirming Vinesh Phogat’s candidature, he added, “It has been decided that she will contest from Julana.”

Election Schedule

The 90-member Haryana Assembly will go to polls on October 5, with the counting of votes scheduled for October 8. The election is poised to be a critical contest between the incumbent BJP and the Congress, which is striving to regain its foothold in the state.

Implications for the Congress

The release of the candidate list underscores the Congress’s strategy to blend experience with new talent. By fielding established politicians alongside fresh faces like Vinesh Phogat, the party aims to appeal to a broad spectrum of voters. The inclusion of prominent sports personalities also reflects an effort to connect with the youth and leverage the popularity of national icons.

Conclusion

As the election date approaches, all eyes are on Haryana to see how the political dynamics unfold. The Congress’s candidate selection and potential alliances will play a significant role in shaping the electoral outcome. Voters await further announcements, including the party’s manifesto and campaign strategies.

It aligns with PM Modi’s vision for the internationalisation of India’s education system.”

Further expanding on the academic collaboration, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed announced several key partnerships between IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi and leading UAE institutions, such as Khalifa University, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Zayed University. These alliances are expected to deepen the academic and research opportunities available to students, driving technological and educational advancements in the region.

With the establishment of the IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi campus, India and the UAE are setting a new benchmark for international academic collaboration, reflecting a shared commitment to knowledge exchange and innovation.

Heavy Evening Showers Drench Hyderabad After Sunny Friday

Watch the Video: Zero Visibility During Heavy Rainfall in Hyderabad

Hyderabad experienced an intense spell of rain on Friday evening following a bright and sunny day, catching many residents off guard. The downpour, which began around 5 p.m., caused significant waterlogging and heavy traffic jams, particularly in key areas like Panjagutta, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Banjara Hills, and Mehdipatnam. The sudden shift in weather made commuting difficult as strong winds and thunderstorms accompanied the rainfall.

Despite the brief nature of the showers, their intensity left parts of the city drenched, and light rain continued intermittently throughout the evening. Earlier in the day, Hyderabad enjoyed clear skies, with temperatures ranging between 30°C and 32°C. However, the afternoon heat was quickly replaced by gathering clouds, culminating in the evening’s stormy weather.

Weather Warnings and Forecasts for Hyderabad and Telangana

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Telangana, warning of moderate downpours until September 9. Hyderabad and surrounding regions are expected to follow a similar weather pattern, with light to moderate showers anticipated in the evenings over the next few days. Temperatures are expected to hover between 28°C and 30°C during this period.

Apart from Hyderabad, several districts in Telangana—Sangareddy, Mancherial, Medak, Wanaparthy, Jogulamba Gadwal, and Nalgonda—experienced heavy rain on Friday. More rain is forecasted for Saturday, with isolated areas in Adilabad, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Khammam, and Mahabubabad expected to receive light to moderate showers.

Rainfall Surpasses Normal Levels Across State

The recent rains have pushed both Hyderabad and Telangana into the “excess rainfall” category, with the state receiving an average of 855.7 mm, which is 41% above the normal 608.7 mm. Hyderabad alone has recorded 677.9 mm of rainfall—38% higher than the usual 489.7 mm. Among city regions, Khairatabad saw the highest deviation, with 802.5 mm of rainfall, marking a 58% increase over the normal average of 508.2 mm.

This surge in rainfall, while providing much-needed relief from the summer heat, has also led to increased waterlogging and disruptions in day-to-day life across the city. With further rains expected, authorities and residents remain on alert for potential flooding and other challenges caused by the weather shift.

New Delhi, September 6: After weeks of speculation about their political future, renowned Olympian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia officially joined the Indian National Congress (INC) on Friday, marking a significant move ahead of the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. Both athletes met with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge before making their formal announcement. Their entry into politics has sparked widespread attention, given their prominence not only in the sports world but also for their roles in leading protests against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

A New Chapter in Public Service

Speaking to the media after joining Congress, Vinesh Phogat expressed gratitude for the support she has received from the public and the media. “I hope to live up to everyone’s expectations. I am grateful to the Congress for standing with us. In difficult times, you learn who truly supports you, and I am happy to be joining a party that stands for women and is ready to fight for them,” Phogat said. She also touched upon her efforts to promote sports among young girls and her continued commitment to wrestling despite attempts by the BJP’s IT cell to undermine her career.

Phogat highlighted her ongoing legal battle against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former WFI president who faces allegations of sexual harassment. “The fight is not over. The case is still in court, and we will not back down. We are here to serve the country,” she declared. She further noted that political parties, apart from the BJP, had supported the wrestlers during their protests, recalling how they were “dragged on the streets” while fighting for justice.

Congress Welcomes Phogat and Punia

K.C. Venugopal, General Secretary of the Congress, hailed the addition of Phogat and Punia as a proud moment for the party. He spoke emotionally about Phogat’s resilience, recounting how her father was tragically shot dead when she was just nine years old. “Her bravery has brought her to this stage,” Venugopal said, noting that Phogat’s disqualification in international competitions was a moment that saddened not just her but the entire nation.

Venugopal also addressed criticism that their entry into politics was part of a larger Congress conspiracy. “Athletes have joined political parties before. Is that a conspiracy too?” he asked rhetorically, dismissing the accusations.

A Potential Candidacy in the Haryana Elections

Phogat and Punia’s decision to join Congress has fueled speculation about their potential candidacy in the Haryana Assembly elections. According to Congress insiders, Phogat is likely to contest from either the Julana or Dadri constituency, while Punia is eyeing the Badli seat. Talks between the wrestlers and Congress leadership are still ongoing regarding their exact roles in the upcoming polls.

On Wednesday, the two athletes met with Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, where discussions about their future political careers were reportedly held. Their move to join Congress comes amid ongoing discussions between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress about forming an alliance in Haryana. A senior Congress leader confirmed that talks between the top leadership of both parties are progressing and a decision is expected soon.

Resignation from Indian Railways

In the afternoon following her induction into Congress, Phogat resigned from her position at Indian Railways, citing personal reasons. “Serving Indian Railways has been a memorable and proud part of my life,” Phogat wrote on X (formerly Twitter), posting a picture of her resignation letter. “At this point in my life, I have decided to separate myself from railway service and have submitted my resignation to the competent authorities.”

Political Support from the Congress

Phogat’s association with the Congress is not new. Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda, one of the first political leaders to publicly support her during her protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, welcomed her at Delhi’s IGI Airport with a symbolic ‘Hanuman Gada’ (mace) following her return from international competitions. Hooda had been a vocal advocate for the wrestlers’ cause and actively participated in the agitation led by Phogat and other Haryana-based wrestlers.

Phogat also met with former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had earlier remarked that the Congress welcomed anyone who wished to join their cause. This latest development signals the Congress’s intent to boost its profile in Haryana, particularly by aligning with influential athletes and public figures as it gears up for the assembly polls.

As the Haryana elections approach, the entry of Phogat and Punia into the political arena could reshape the political dynamics in the state, especially in constituencies with strong wrestling communities. Their leadership and activism may play a crucial role in rallying public support for the Congress, as the party seeks to regain ground in the state.

Major Fire Breaks Out at 15-Storey Building in Mumbai’s Lower Parel

0

Mumbai, September 6: A major fire broke out at the 15-storey Times Tower building in Mumbai’s bustling Lower Parel area early Friday morning. The incident, which took place at the Kamala Mills compound, prompted a swift response from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, who battled the flames for over four hours before successfully containing the blaze. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Blaze Erupts Early Morning

According to officials, the fire began around 6:30 a.m. in the electrical duct of the building and quickly spread across multiple floors, with flames being confined between the third and seventh floors of the high-rise. The fire brigade declared it a level 2 fire—classified as a major emergency—prompting the immediate deployment of eight fire engines, five jumbo water tankers, and other firefighting equipment.

As smoke billowed from the building, residents and office-goers in the surrounding areas expressed concern. The fire brigade worked diligently to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. Civic authorities confirmed that after hours of rigorous firefighting, the blaze was brought under control without any injuries or fatalities.

Firefighting Efforts

The Mumbai Fire Brigade worked in coordination with other emergency services to mitigate the damage. “Our teams responded quickly, ensuring the fire did not spread further,” a senior fire official said. “Five fire engines and seven jumbo tankers were deployed, and after four hours of intense efforts, the fire was finally contained.”

The cause of the fire is believed to have been electrical in nature, with the flames originating in the building’s electrical duct. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether there were any safety violations or issues with the building’s fire management system.

Concerns Raised Over Safety and Illegal Constructions

This incident has raised concerns about the safety standards in the Kamala Mills compound, an area that has witnessed multiple fires in recent years. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Sandeep Deshpande voiced his frustration, highlighting the lack of fire safety audits in the area.

“This is the third time a fire has broken out in the Kamala Mills compound in five years. Illegal construction is rampant here, and local MLAs are turning a blind eye to the issue. The authorities need to conduct regular fire audits to prevent such incidents,” Deshpande said, expressing concerns about inadequate regulatory oversight.

A History of Fires in Kamala Mills Compound

The Kamala Mills compound, a commercial hub housing offices, restaurants, and media companies, has been the site of previous fire incidents, including a devastating blaze in 2017 that claimed 14 lives at a rooftop restaurant. The recurrence of such incidents has put a spotlight on the safety protocols in place and the enforcement of fire safety regulations in the area.

Authorities are expected to investigate whether safety measures in the Times Tower building met the required standards and if any lapses contributed to the fire. Civic officials have urged building management in the area to ensure that all fire prevention and safety protocols are up to date.

While no casualties have been reported this time, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by inadequate fire safety measures in high-rise buildings across the city.
