0

In a significant development, the INDIA Alliance, a formidable coalition of opposition parties, concluded a two-day brainstorming session in Mumbai. During the meeting, the alliance established a 14-member coordination panel and announced its intention to formulate a seat-sharing arrangement among its member parties for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

Tensions Flare Over ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal

The political arena is ablaze with debates and disputes over the contentious ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal put forth by the central government. Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress party, remarked that the increasing strength of the INDIA Alliance is causing unease within the ruling government. Kharge cautioned that the opposition should brace for more political skirmishes, potential raids, and arrests, attributing them to what he referred to as the government’s “vendetta politics.”

Earlier today, the central government officially announced the formation of a committee dedicated to studying the ‘One Nation, One Election’ concept. This committee, under the leadership of former President Ram Nath Kovind, will submit a comprehensive report on the feasibility and implications of this proposal. Meanwhile, the INDIA Alliance has chosen to delay the unveiling of its official logo. According to Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena and UBT, some alliance members voiced concerns about the necessity of a common logo, given that each party already possesses its distinct party poll symbol.

Stay tuned for further updates on these critical developments as India’s political landscape continues to evolve.

One Nation, One Election’ Proposal Gains Momentum as Expert Panel Formed

The upcoming special session of Parliament, scheduled from September 18 to 22, holds the key to transformative changes as it deliberates on critical issues, including ‘One Nation, One Election.’ India’s electoral landscape may be poised for a historic transformation.

In a significant development, the government has established a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind to delve into the feasibility of implementing ‘One Nation, One Election.’ This ambitious initiative aims to synchronize general and state elections, streamlining the electoral process.

This move comes on the heels of recent reports suggesting that the government is contemplating the introduction of a ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill during the upcoming special session of Parliament, scheduled from September 18 to 22.

The composition of the committee will be unveiled in a forthcoming notification, adding to the anticipation surrounding the potential advancement of Lok Sabha elections to coincide with several state assembly elections later this year.

Sources indicate that Ram Nath Kovind will engage with experts and seek input from leaders across the political spectrum to comprehensively assess the practicality and methodology of reinstating concurrent Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, reminiscent of the electoral landscape until 1967.

‘One Nation, One Election’ is a visionary concept that envisions synchronized elections throughout India. This means that elections for both the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies will occur simultaneously, with voting occurring concurrently across the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has championed this idea since assuming office in 2014, highlighting the financial burden imposed by frequent election cycles and their potential to disrupt developmental activities. Former President Kovind also voiced his support for this idea during his tenure starting in 2017.

Notably, the forthcoming special session of Parliament marks a significant occasion, being the first full-fledged special session during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nine-year tenure. Unlike the joint session held for the midnight GST roll-out in 2017, this session will see both Houses convene separately, as is customary during regular sessions.

In anticipation of this historic event, government officials, including the joint secretary, additional secretary, and secretary, have been instructed to remain in Delhi during the special parliamentary session, underscoring its importance. Stay tuned for more updates as this critical initiative unfolds.

Income Tax Department Issues Show-Cause Notice to Former Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu

0

The Income Tax department has issued a show-cause notice to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu. The notice, dated August 4, questions the legality of ₹118 crore allegedly received by Naidu as kickbacks from infrastructure companies, potentially labeling it as “undisclosed income.”

The Central Circle, Hyderabad, issued the notice, rejecting Naidu’s preliminary objections, which claimed that the tax proceedings should have been initiated by the jurisdictional assessing officer. The notice indicates that the department has gathered statements and seized materials suggesting unaccounted income through bogus sub-contracts, allegedly benefiting the former CM.

Section 153C of the I-T Act allows the revenue department to take action against a party other than the searched individual if incriminating evidence is found. Interestingly, this notice emerges amidst speculations of a possible alliance between TDP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 general elections, fueled by Naidu’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Notably, Naidu, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), and the finance ministry have not responded to queries regarding this matter. The I-T investigation is rooted in searches at the premises of Manoj Vasudev Pardasany (MVP), who allegedly orchestrated sham sub-contractor operations on behalf of Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Pvt Ltd (SPCL) in Andhra Pradesh. These searches revealed messages and documents indicating cash generation and its delivery to Naidu, as well as funds being siphoned off from infrastructure projects.

The notice highlights MVP’s connection with Naidu’s personal secretary P Srinivas and funds allegedly diverted from government projects. It claims that Naidu was the ultimate beneficiary of payments received by various entities through these bogus contracts. The notice concludes by questioning why ₹118,98,13,207 should not be treated as Naidu’s undisclosed income for the assessment year 2020-21.

This development has raised significant questions about the financial dealings of a prominent political figure and could have far-reaching implications.

NCERT Attains Deemed University Status: A Milestone in Education

0

New Delhi: In a significant development, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been granted the prestigious status of a deemed university, as announced by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during a special event marking the 63rd foundation day of NCERT in the national capital.

During the event, Minister Pradhan stated, “Today, I want to announce that we are granting the status of deemed to be university to NCERT.” He also emphasized the importance of merging Bal Bhavans and Bal Vatika with NCERT to offer a comprehensive education experience for children.

Established in 1961 under the Society Act, NCERT’s primary mission is to assist and advise the government in matters of school education. Notably, institutions of higher education, aside from universities, can be declared as ‘Deemed-to-be-university’ by the Central government upon the advice of the UGC, provided they maintain exceptionally high standards in their specific areas of study.

With this newfound status, NCERT will have the authority to offer its own graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degree programs. Moreover, Education Minister Pradhan inaugurated three cutting-edge labs, including one dedicated to virtual reality education and another serving as a teacher training center.

In his address, Minister Pradhan drew parallels between the Chandrayaan-3 space mission and the National Education Policy, expressing his confidence that the new education policy would achieve the same level of success as the recent ISRO project. He attributed part of the credit for Chandrayaan-3’s success to NCERT, highlighting its role as the birthplace of innovative ideas for such projects.

Violence Escalates in Manipur: 5 Dead, 18 Injured in Ongoing Clashes Since August 29

0

Recent violence in Manipur’s Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts has resulted in at least five deaths and 18 injuries over the past 72 hours. The clash stems from an ongoing gun battle between the Kuki and Meitei ethnic groups.

The conflict began on August 29, with heavy firing in the Khoirentak area resulting in the death of a village volunteer. The situation escalated, and fresh rounds of firing occurred on Thursday after a temporary pause on Wednesday evening. The gunfight persists in the foothills of Khoirentak and the adjacent Chingphei and Khousabung regions.

Among the casualties, one individual succumbed to bomb splinter injuries during transport to Guwahati via Mizoram. Another injured person, who had sustained splinter injuries, died on Thursday morning at Churachandpur district hospital.

Of the five individuals with splinter injuries sustained in the Chingphei area on Wednesday evening, three were brought to Churachandpur district hospital. Their injuries varied, with one struck in the head and the others wounded in their shoulders, legs, and back.

In previous incidents near Narainsena village in Bishnupur, two men were killed and six injured. One fatality resulted from a bullet wound, while the other occurred due to a misfired homemade gun.

Amid the violence, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) called for an immediate shutdown in Churachandpur, excluding essential services such as water and medical supply. The ITLF highlighted the toll of ongoing violence, which has now reached five deaths.

Tensions have risen as tribal areas face mortar shell attacks, allegedly sourced from police stations and armories, leading to significant tribal casualties. The ITLF emphasized the need for the government and security forces to prioritize the retrieval of stolen weapons from the Meitei community.

These continuous attacks are perceived as an attempt to disrupt political talks between tribal groups operating under Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements and the central government. The most recent round of talks began on Thursday and is set to continue on Friday.

Security forces have conducted search operations in vulnerable areas of Kangpokpi, Thoubal, Churachandpur, and Imphal-West districts, resulting in the recovery of arms, ammunition, explosives, and IED material. The police have also established checkpoints (nakas) and detained numerous individuals in connection with various violations.

Ethnic violence in Manipur initially erupted on May 3 during a “Tribal Solidarity March,” organized in response to the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The conflict primarily involves the Meiteis, who constitute around 53% of the population, and the Nagas and Kukis, who account for about 40% and mainly reside in the hill districts. Over 160 people have died, and many more have been injured since the outbreak of the violence.

“UAE’s Fuel Prices Surge for Third Consecutive Month, Reflecting Global Oil Dynamics”

0

The UAE’s Fuel Price Committee has taken a decisive step on Thursday, one that can hardly be described as straightforward. In a move that signifies a significant departure from the norm, the committee has chosen to increase the retail prices of both petrol and diesel for the month of September. This marks the third consecutive month in which prices have experienced an upward trend.

With the new pricing structure coming into effect on September 1, motorists will find themselves paying notably more at the pump. The cost of Super 98 petrol, for instance, will witness a substantial rise from its previous price of Dh3.14 in August to Dh3.42 per litre, reflecting a significant increase of 28 fils, or approximately 8.9 percent. Meanwhile, the price of Special 95 petrol, a staple choice for many, will ascend from Dh3.02 in August to Dh3.31 per litre in September. This translates to an increase of 29 fils, or approximately 9.6 percent. Similarly, E-Plus 91, priced at Dh3.23, will be subjected to a 9.5 percent hike, amounting to an additional 28 fils.

Diesel, too, has not been spared from this surge. The price of diesel will undergo an increase of 15.25 percent, equating to 45 fils, ultimately setting the new price at Dh3.4 per litre.

Intriguingly, these price adjustments come against the backdrop of Brent crude oil prices, which held steady in the $80s per barrel range throughout August. The pricing fluctuated within the range of $84.91 to $87.55. Of note, the zenith of $87.55 was reached on August 9, only to experience a subsequent retreat as the month progressed.

This notable rise in fuel prices is a reflection of various intricate factors at play in the global energy landscape, which in turn impacts the UAE’s local market. While global oil prices have maintained a presence in the $80s range, it has become evident that these influences have led the UAE’s Fuel Price Committee to implement these substantial price adjustments. In doing so, they have unveiled a pricing paradigm that defies easy predictions and underscores the intricate relationship between global oil markets and local economic considerations.

Possible Introduction of ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill During Upcoming Parliament Session

0

The upcoming special session of Parliament, scheduled from September 18 to 22, might witness the introduction of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill, sources have indicated. Presently, Lok Sabha elections and state Assembly elections are held separately, leading to multiple election cycles annually. The proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ framework seeks to amalgamate all elections within a singular cycle, potentially occurring on the same day.

Nonetheless, the notion has encountered opposition, prominently from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In January, the AAP alleged that the ruling BJP was exploiting this idea to validate the exchange of elected representatives within its “Operation Lotus.” The party also contended that the BJP was transitioning from a parliamentary system to a presidential one. Their apprehension rested on the concern that well-funded parties could sway state matters through financial and authoritative influence, potentially influencing voter decisions if Lok Sabha and assembly elections coincided.

Contrastingly, the BJP views synchronized elections as a means to expedite development. Chief ministers of various BJP-governed states have voiced worries about the disruption caused by recurrent elections and the imposition of the model code of conduct, which impedes progress-oriented work. They advocate for dialogues with opposition-led state administrations to explore the feasibility of simultaneous elections.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill, aimed at streamlining the electoral process, faces resistance due to apprehensions regarding its potential repercussions on state affairs and governance. The discourse surrounding this concept is anticipated to persist within the political landscape.

Rahul Gandhi Urges JPC Inquiry into Adani Allegations, Citing Global Reputation Concerns

0

Congress Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, has called for the establishment of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into recent allegations surrounding the Adani Group. In a press conference held in Mumbai ahead of the upcoming I.N.D.I.A meeting, Gandhi referred to reports from reputable international newspapers concerning Adani’s activities.

Gandhi emphasized the significance of these publications, underscoring their impact on foreign investments in India and the nation’s global image. He highlighted that these reports suggest a substantial sum, exceeding one billion dollars, was routed from India, traversing various international channels before returning. He raised pertinent questions about the origin of this capital – whether it belongs to Adani or another entity.

The orchestrator behind this alleged financial maneuvering, as Gandhi pointed out, is Vinod Adani, the brother of Gautam Adani. Additionally, two other individuals, Nasir Ali Shaban Ahli and Chang Chung Ling, both foreign nationals, have been implicated in the process of circulating these funds.

Gandhi further questioned the rationale behind permitting these foreign individuals to manipulate the valuation of a conglomerate that holds significant sway over India’s infrastructural landscape.

Drawing attention to potential conflicts of interest, Gandhi highlighted that the individual who cleared the Adani Group in a SEBI investigation is now affiliated with a media company under the same corporate umbrella.

In light of an article from the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which alleges that substantial sums were invested in publicly traded stocks of the Adani Group via opaque Mauritius funds, Gandhi raised concerns over the potential concealment of business partners linked to the Adani family.

With the imminent arrival of G20 leaders, Gandhi underscored the urgency of clarifying the situation surrounding this “special company” associated with a person closely connected to the Prime Minister. He questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on the matter and urged the appropriate authorities to initiate investigations and hold responsible individuals accountable.

In conclusion, Gandhi stressed that the timing of these allegations, just prior to the G20 summit, necessitates a transparent resolution. He emphasized that clarifying these concerns before the arrival of global leaders is paramount to safeguarding India’s reputation on the international stage

Drug Bust Shakes Hyderabad: Businessman cum Film Financier Among Three Arrested

0

Hyderabad witnessed a major crackdown on Wednesday night as the Telangana State Anti Narcotics Bureau (TSNAB) and Gudimalkapur police apprehended three individuals, including a businessman-cum-film-financier, in connection with a drug-related operation.

The trio taken into custody consists of K Venkataratna Reddy (47), a prominent film financier, B Balaji (34), a businessman and former Navy officer, and D Murali (42), a railway employee. The police operation led to the confiscation of a substantial cache of drugs, as well as other incriminating evidence.

Seized from the scene were 2.8 grams of cocaine, 6 LSD blots, 25 ecstasy pills, two packets of ganja, a sum of Rs 72,000 in cash, two vehicles, and five mobile phones.

Investigations reveal that Balaji was allegedly orchestrating drug-fueled parties within the city’s social circuit. He is purportedly well-connected with numerous businessmen and film artists. Balaji’s drug procurement activities reportedly involved sourcing from multiple suppliers, including three individuals of Nigerian origin residing in Bengaluru and Vishakapatnam.

The police’s detailed inquiry uncovered a link between Balaji and Venkataratna during one of these parties. Venkataratna, known for financing films such as “Kick,” “Lovely,” “Damarukam,” and “Surya,” allegedly extended financial support to Balaji’s drug business endeavors.

TSNAB’s Superintendent of Police, D Sunitha Reddy, stated, “Venkataratna was financing the drug business of Balaji who purchased the drugs and sold it to customers and earned profits.”

The operation unfolded when Balaji was apprehended in Gudimalkapur based on provided intelligence. Subsequent actions led the police to an apartment in Madhapur where further drugs were seized. At the Madhapur location, Venkataratna and Murali were found in the company of two women, who were reportedly enticed with promises of film roles.

Notably, four individuals responsible for supplying drugs to Balaji and 18 consumers remain at large. Balaji’s past involvement in similar cases had prompted the TSNAB to keep him under surveillance.

A case has been registered at the Gudimalkapur police station, as authorities continue their efforts to dismantle the drug network and bring all culprits to justice.

Opposition Alliance Gears Up: Focus on Unity to Counter BJP in 2024 Elections

0

Political Dynamics Unfold
As anticipation builds for the third meeting of the INDIA opposition alliance scheduled for Thursday in Mumbai, insiders reveal a crucial theme: prioritizing collective victory over individual agendas to combat the BJP in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Sources familiar with the matter share that all participating opposition parties, united against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), have received a clarion call to set aside personal ambitions for the alliance’s triumph.

This call for unity includes the Congress party, urged to embrace its role as the “big brother” by accommodating regional players for the alliance’s success. As an illustration, insiders point to the example of Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress possesses just one seat. Here, cooperation with the Samajwadi Party (SP) becomes pivotal to counter the BJP’s dominance.

The INDIA bloc also encompasses the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), another key player from Uttar Pradesh, a state that contributes a significant 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha. This cooperative spirit is echoed in other states as well, where the Congress is encouraged to collaborate with potent entities such as the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra (comprising Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in Jharkhand, and Janata Dal-United and Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar.

With diverse alliances in Delhi, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu, where the DMK-led government under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wields influence, the Congress is urged to find common ground with its regional allies, focusing on victory rather than maximizing seat shares.

Insiders disclose that after comprehensive deliberations, the Congress is inclined to relinquish some seats in favor of strengthening the alliance’s prospects for the 2024 elections. This sentiment aligns with the stance expressed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge during the second meeting in Bengaluru.

The forthcoming third meeting, attended by 26 parties, is set to delve into key elements, including a draft of the common minimum programme and the INDIA parties’ logo. Organized by the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, and Shiv Sena (UBT)-led Maha Vikas Aghadi, the Mumbai meeting holds the promise of shaping a unified opposition strategy against the BJP’s electoral stronghold.
