Mahatma Gandhi’s Great-Grandson Petitions Supreme Court for FIR Against Teacher in Muzaffarnagar Muslim Child Assault

0

The distressing incident of a Muslim child being subjected to physical assault in a Muzaffarnagar school has now made its way to the Supreme Court. In a significant development, Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has filed a petition urging the court to initiate legal proceedings, including the registration of an FIR, against the female teacher involved in the incident.

New Delhi: The case concerning the assault of a Muslim child in a school in Muzaffarnagar has escalated to the highest judicial authority in India, the Supreme Court. Justice Abhay Soka’s bench is scheduled to conduct a hearing on this matter today, September 6, 2023. Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has implored the court to take appropriate action against the female teacher responsible for the assault.

The incident in question recently caused an uproar at Neha Public School, Mansoorpur, situated in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh (UP), after a video depicting the child’s assault went viral. The father of the child alleged that the teacher had instigated the child to engage in physical altercations with classmates, allegedly due to the child’s community background. In her defense, teacher Tripta Tyagi claimed, “The child’s parents had requested that we be strict with him as he was not completing his homework. Given that he has a disability, we asked other children to help him by engaging in mild physical reprimands.”

In response to the incident, the district education department has issued an order for the school’s closure. According to the Muzaffarnagar District Education Department, the school’s registration, which was granted in 2019 for a three-year period, expired in 2022, prompting the closure directive. Students who were enrolled in the school have since been accommodated in other educational institutions.

Following the widespread dissemination of the video, which led to public outrage across the country, the local police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the teacher. In an official statement, the police clarified that a teacher in Khobapur village had been charged in an FIR for allegedly instructing students to physically reprimand their classmates for failing to complete homework assignments. The FIR was filed based on a complaint lodged by the child’s father.

The victim in this case conveyed, “I couldn’t remember a particular concept, so one of my classmates slapped me. The teacher instructed them to do so. Subsequently, they subjected me to an hour of physical abuse.” The boy’s cousin disclosed that he had visited the school on an errand, where he witnessed the teacher instructing other students to slap his brother.

Supreme Court to Hear Editors Guild’s Plea Against Manipur Police FIR

In a significant development, the Supreme Court has granted an urgent hearing to a writ petition filed by the President and three editors of the Editors Guild of India (EGI). The Editors Guild members are challenging the First Information Report (FIR) lodged by Manipur Police, alleging the release of a “biased and factually inaccurate” report on the ethnic conflict in Manipur, a northeastern state of India.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra have taken cognizance of the matter. Senior advocate Shyam Divan, representing the members of the fact-finding committee formed by EGI, emphasized the urgency of the case, expressing concerns about potential arrests. Divan stated, “There is a very grave urgency in the case… Essentially, we are seeking emergent protection from arrest and coercive steps.”

After brief deliberation, the bench responded, “Alright, you get your papers produced. We will take it up after our admission cases are over for today.”

Multiple FIRs have been filed against the President of the EGI and three editors – Seema Guha, Bharat Bhushan, and Sanjay Kapoor. They had visited Manipur last month to investigate media coverage of the ethnic violence and its surrounding circumstances.

A three-member fact-finding team from EGI, after conducting an on-ground assessment in Manipur, published its report in New Delhi last week. The report claimed that media reports on the ethnic violence in Manipur were one-sided and accused the state leadership of showing partiality.

The FIR alleges that the EGI report incorrectly labeled a photo of a burning building in Manipur’s Churachandpur district as a “Kuki house.” In reality, the building in question was a Forest Department beat office that had been set on fire by a mob on May 3, the day when widespread violence erupted in the district and other parts of the state.

EGI, in response, issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging an error in a photo caption in the report released on September 2. They assured that the mistake was being rectified, and an updated report would be uploaded shortly, expressing regret for the error that occurred during the photo editing stage.

Congress Confirms Participation in Special Parliament Session, Seeks Agenda from PM Modi

In a significant political development, the Congress Party has officially declared its participation in the upcoming special session of Parliament. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is poised to send a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the session’s agenda and highlighting critical concerns.

On Tuesday, Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress’ Parliamentary Party, convened a meeting with the party’s Parliamentary strategy group to discuss the party’s approach.

A trusted party insider has disclosed that the Congress has chosen not to boycott the special session scheduled to begin on September 18 and extend until September 22.

During the Parliamentary strategy group meeting, party MPs, including Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, unanimously agreed to attend the special session with a proactive and constructive agenda.

Additionally, the source revealed that Sonia Gandhi intends to dispatch a letter to the Prime Minister in the coming days formally requesting the session’s agenda. In this letter, she will also convey the Opposition’s demand for discussions on a range of pressing issues during the session.

Notably, the decision for Sonia Gandhi to correspond with PM Modi garnered unanimous support from all floor leaders of the INDIA bloc in Parliament. These leaders convened at Kharge’s residence to strategize for the five-day special session.

This development follows the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance’s (INDIA) decision during its two meetings to prioritize discussions on various pressing matters, including the Adani Group, the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), rising prices, unemployment, the situation in Manipur, and economic, political, and foreign issues during the session commencing on September 18.

Meanwhile, an additional party source has reported that during a dinner meeting at Kharge’s residence on Tuesday night, floor leaders discussed concerns about attempts by government officials and ministers to use “Bharat” instead of “India.”

A recent controversy arose when a G20 dinner invitation referred to Droupadi Murmu as the President of “Bharat” rather than the President of India.

The INDIA bloc parties are determined to oppose any efforts to eliminate the term “India” from the Constitution. (Source: National Herald)

Full Curfew Imposed in Manipur’s Valley Districts Amid Tensions Over Army Barricade

0

Manipur authorities have imposed a comprehensive curfew across all five valley districts of the state as a precautionary measure, effective from Tuesday evening, according to official sources.

This decision to cancel curfew relaxation hours in Bishnupur, Kakching, Thoubal, Imphal West, and Imphal East follows developments related to the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and its women’s wing. COCOMI has called on residents from across the valley districts to take action against an army barricade located at Phougakchao Ikhai in Bishnupur district, a few kilometers away from Churachandpur, on Wednesday, officials have confirmed.

Presently, curfew relaxation is permitted in all five valley districts from 5 am to 6 pm daily.

In an unscheduled press conference, government spokesperson and Information and Public Relations Minister Sapam Ranjan issued an appeal, stating, “The government urges COCOMI to reconsider their plan to approach the army barricade at Phougakchao Ikhai near Torbung on September 6.” Sapam also called on the public “to support the security measures taken by the government.”

Notably, individuals engaged in essential services, including healthcare, electricity, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), petrol stations, educational institutions, municipal services, media, court operations, and flight passengers, will be exempt from the curfew, according to officials.

COCOMI’s media coordinator, Somendro Thokchom, revealed that the committee had previously urged the government and relevant authorities to dismantle the barricade by August 30. While encouraging residents to approach the barricade, Thokchom underscored that the state government should bear full responsibility for any untoward incidents.

Local residents have expressed concerns about the Phougakchao Ikhai barricade, stating that it has prevented them from returning to their homes in Torbung since the outbreak of violence on May 3.

California Nears Landmark Ban on Caste Discrimination, Supporters Rally for Swift Approval

0

California is on the verge of making history by potentially becoming the first U.S. state to enact legislation prohibiting caste discrimination. The bill, aimed at banning this practice, recently cleared a significant hurdle when it passed in the California State Assembly. Following this milestone, proponents of the legislation have embarked on a hunger strike, urging Governor Gavin Newsom to promptly sign it into law.

If Governor Newsom approves the bill, California will not only become the inaugural U.S. state but also the first jurisdiction outside of India to outlaw discrimination based on caste. Earlier this year, Seattle achieved the distinction of becoming the first U.S. city to enact such a prohibition.

The bill, officially designated SB403, titled “Discrimination on the basis of ancestry,” gained overwhelming support in the California Senate with a 31-5 vote, clearing procedural formalities on Tuesday. The groundbreaking anti-caste discrimination legislation will now await Governor Newsom’s decision to either sign it into law or reject it. The bill amends California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act by incorporating caste as a protected category under “ancestry.”

Senator Aisha Wahab introduced the bill in February, and on Tuesday, she presented SB 403, known as the Caste Discrimination Bill, for its Senate Concurrence Vote.

Thenmozhi Soundararajan, the executive director of Equality Labs, a driving force behind the bill and similar actions across the country, expressed, “After conducting over 700 advocacy meetings across the entire state of California, the people have spoken resoundingly for caste equity protections. As a Californian who has endured caste my whole life, I know the struggles and adversity caste-oppressed Californians have unjustly faced firsthand. Caste-oppressed people have organized for over twenty years so we could have lives free from violent attacks and discrimination.”

The bill’s enactment would hold individuals accountable and subject them to legal consequences for permitting or engaging in caste-based discrimination in California, as stated in a media release.

Govind Acharya from Amnesty International USA emphasized that caste discrimination inherently violates civil rights. He cited the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, asserting that caste-based discrimination and violence undermine universal human dignity and equality by differentiating between “inferior” and “superior” categories of individuals, which is unacceptable.

A hunger strike has been organized as a powerful demonstration of support for the bill. Dr. Nirmal Singh, a doctor and lead organizer of the Californians for Caste Equity coalition, stated, “I am fasting as a reminder of how important this bill is to my two daughters. I cannot live in this state knowing that caste discrimination can continue unabated. We fast now for all those who have not been able to speak out.”

It is important to note that a substantial number of South Asians and Indian Americans have opposed the bill, arguing that it could criminalize the Hindu community, in particular. Suhag Shukla, the executive director of the Hindu American Foundation, contended that California has regressed to its racist past by passing legislation that demonizes and targets South Asians and Hindus. She further emphasized that any law intended to target an ethnic community is not only racist but also unconstitutional, pledging to explore every option to protect the rights of Hindu Californians.

A Delta Air Lines flight en route from Atlanta to Barcelona, Spain, made an unexpected U-turn approximately an hour into the journey following a distressing medical emergency involving a passenger. The incident, disclosed via air traffic audio, unfolded as a passenger suffered a severe medical episode, resulting in a disruptive situation on board.

On September 1, Delta Flight 194 took off from Atlanta at approximately 8:30 p.m., initially slated for an eight- to nine-hour flight to Barcelona, as indicated by the flight tracking service Flightaware.com. However, less than an hour after departure, the flight abruptly reversed course, heading back towards Atlanta.

Recordings from LiveATC.net, later shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), captured the pilot’s communication with air traffic control. In the audio, the pilot described the situation as a “biohazard” on the flight, citing a passenger who had experienced a severe medical episode that prompted the return to Atlanta.

Delta Airlines confirmed that 336 passengers were on board during the incident. When queried about the precise cause for the flight’s return, Delta representatives referred to it as an “onboard medical issue.”

In an official statement, a Delta spokesperson stated, “Delta flight 194 from Atlanta to Barcelona returned to Atlanta following an onboard medical issue. Our teams worked diligently and safely to assist our customers in reaching their final destination. We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to our passengers due to the delay.”

Remarkably, the same aircraft resumed its journey the following day and successfully completed the flight to Barcelona. However, the unforeseen disruption resulted in an arrival delay of 8 hours and 6 minutes at the final destination.

WATCH / Arvind Kejriwal Criticizes Potential Renaming of ‘India’ to ‘Bharat,’ Calls it a Betrayal.

0

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed strong criticism and concern on Tuesday regarding the reported proposal to change the name of ‘India’ to ‘Bharat.’ Kejriwal characterized the move as a betrayal and emphasized that renaming the country should not be taken lightly.

“If the INDIA Alliance Parties change their name to ‘Bharat,’ will the Modi government then change the name of ‘Bharat’ to ‘BJP’?” : Arvind Kejriwal.

He questioned the motives behind this potential change, suggesting that it might be driven by political considerations ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Kejriwal argued that altering the country’s name in response to the formation of the ‘INDIA’ alliance was unnecessary and indicated a lack of focus on genuine issues affecting the nation.

Additionally, Kejriwal accused the BJP of employing diversionary tactics, particularly mentioning the ‘One nation, one election’ proposal. He criticized this initiative, suggesting that it might result in BJP leaders being less engaged with the public and focusing more on global affairs, potentially leading to economic challenges for the citizens.

Assam: Police Demand 2.5 Crore, Threaten ‘Encounter’ on Complaint of Muslim Businessman; Several Police Personnel, Including an IPS Officer, Arrested*

0

In a distressing incident that has sent shockwaves through Assam, a Muslim businessman, Rabiul Islam, came forward with alarming allegations against the police. He claims that the police demanded a staggering sum of 2.5 crore rupees from him, coupled with chilling threats of a staged “encounter.”

Rabiul Islam’s harrowing experience has ignited a firestorm of controversy. He alleges that the threats and extortion attempts were orchestrated by a man who identified himself as an “encounter specialist.” This distressing account began on July 16 when a group of police personnel forcibly entered his family home around 1:30 am.

The police subjected Islam to a brutal ordeal, involving physical assault that lasted for hours. They demanded answers regarding drugs and cash, despite Islam’s insistence of having no knowledge of such matters. His residence was searched without a warrant, and numerous personal belongings were confiscated.

Following the unlawful detention at the Bhabanipur police station, the situation took a turn for the worse. Islam was taken to the residence of the Superintendent of Police, where he alleges further assaults and relentless questioning took place. Subsequently, he was transported back to the police station, where he claims the physical abuse continued. In addition, the police reportedly conducted searches at both his office and his father-in-law’s home on that fateful day.

The ordeal reached a horrifying climax when, late at night, Islam was placed inside a vehicle. Accompanying him were individuals in civilian attire and one person in a police uniform. They transported him to a detergent factory, where they threatened to shoot him, allegedly on the orders of the Director General of Police, Assam. Another person from a following car pressured him to confess to having links with jihadi elements and to the illegal acquisition of properties.

This shocking case has prompted swift and resolute action by the authorities. Several police personnel, including the high-ranking IPS officer Siddhartha Buragohan, Deputy Superintendent of Police Pushkal Gogoi, Additional Superintendent of Police Gayatri Sonowal, her husband Subhas Chander, Sub-Inspector Debajit Giri, and constable Inzamamul Hassan, along with three others, have been arrested in connection with these grave allegations.

The Director General of Police, Assam, G P Singh, has affirmed that the FIR was registered because the complaint appeared to be “prima facie true.” He also emphasized that lawful measures are being taken against the accused officers.

This disturbing incident has shed light on concerns of police misconduct and corruption in Assam, leading to heightened scrutiny and a demand for accountability in the state’s law enforcement agencies.

Campaign Enthusiasm Builds as CM KCR Prepares to Contest Kamareddy in Telangana Assembly Elections

0

A surge of excitement has gripped the BRS cadre in Kamareddy as the President of the party and Chief Minister, K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), readies himself to run from the Kamareddy constituency in the upcoming Assembly elections. Extensive preparations are already underway, with party members actively addressing key issues and devising practical solutions.

CM KCR’s decision to contest from Kamareddy has ignited a concentrated effort to focus on the constituency’s affairs. This week, he is scheduled to convene a crucial meeting with Kamareddy constituency leaders at Pragathi Bhavan to delve into the political dynamics of the region, discuss party activities, and review ongoing development initiatives.

Over the past few weeks, Chandrashekhar Rao has established contact with leaders at the constituency and mandal levels, seeking insights into local politics and progress within Kamareddy district. He has demonstrated his dedication to the region by announcing the establishment of a government medical college and allocating Rs 197 crore for the Mission Bhagiratha pipeline replacement, among other projects.

The President of the BRS party is expected to visit his new constituency at least once before the official schedule for the Assembly elections is announced. The party machinery is fully engaged in poll preparations, with BRS MLC K Kavitha leading the Chief Minister’s campaign and outreach efforts to connect with voters. Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy, local MLA Gampa Govardhan, and other BRS leaders are actively involved in the groundwork for the elections.

While CM Chandrashekhar Rao’s decision to contest from Kamareddy initially surprised local party members, it has since bolstered their morale. Opposition parties have alleged that the Chief Minister chose Kamareddy due to concerns about potential defeat in his current constituency, Gajwel.

However, MLC Kavitha dismissed these claims, emphasizing that Chandrashekhar Rao’s decision to contest from Kamareddy was a strategic one, in addition to Gajwel. She refuted allegations of fear, stating, “It is ridiculous to suggest that the Chief Minister is afraid of being defeated. He is a leader who can contest from any seat in the country and win easily. He has remained the invincible leader of Telangana.”

Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flooding in Hyderabad; Begumpet Bridge Closed, Mayor Urges Caution

0

The city of Hyderabad grappled with the aftermath of heavy rain as low-lying areas found themselves inundated, causing significant disruptions to daily life. Traffic movement in various parts of the city was reduced to a crawl.

Motorists traveling from Panjagutta to Kukatpally encountered floodwaters at Maithrivanam and Moosapet metro stations. The Erragadda main road was submerged in knee-deep rainwater, and the Balkampet-Begumpet bridge had to be temporarily closed due to extensive waterlogging.

In the face of these challenges, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Disaster Response Force (GHMC-DRF) team worked tirelessly to rescue a bus trapped in floodwaters in Srinagar Colony. Several roads, including those near Fatehnagar-Begumpet and Aramgarh, were also inundated, causing further difficulties for commuters.

Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi promptly engaged GHMC officials in a conference, emphasizing the need to take immediate measures to prevent loss of life and property in low-lying areas. Residents were advised to remain indoors and venture out only when necessary.

To manage the increasing water levels, HMWS&SB authorities opened six gates of Osman Sagar and six gates of Himayath Sagar. This action was taken in response to heavy inflows, and water was released into the downstreams of River Musi at 1 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
