“Modi’s Press Freedom Record in Spotlight During G20 Summit in New Delhi”

0

The White House disclosed that reporters accompanying President Joe Biden to the G20 summit in India will have limited access to press interactions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite repeated requests for expanded press access, the White House noted that the meeting between the two leaders will take place at the prime minister’s residence, an unusual venue choice for such engagements. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan explained that the host country’s protocols and parameters for the G20 summit influenced the limited press access.

Sullivan confirmed that the administration had advocated for a pool spray of the meeting, which is customary when President Biden hosts foreign leaders at the White House. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to ensuring press access.

Indian Prime Minister Modi, who has faced criticism from press freedom groups for his government’s actions against independent reporting, has rarely taken questions from the media since taking office. During a previous state visit to the United States, negotiations were required to secure Modi’s participation in a news conference at the White House.

The White House has not hesitated to criticize Modi’s record on press freedom and humanitarian issues. During Modi’s visit to the United States, six Democratic lawmakers boycotted his address to Congress, citing concerns about India’s treatment of Muslim minorities.

Despite efforts by various officials, including Sullivan, White House communications director Ben LaBolt, deputy national security adviser Jon Finer, and Indo-Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell, to persuade their Indian counterparts to grant more press access during Biden’s visit, the requests went unanswered.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed the administration’s commitment to facilitating media access to the president during his trip to India but noted the challenges faced in securing expanded access.

President Biden will hold a news conference in Vietnam, rather than in India, following the conclusion of the G20 summit. The White House explained that this decision was based on logistical considerations and would not affect the substance of the press conference.

Sullivan also indicated that there might not be many formal engagements with other world leaders during the G20 summit due to the event’s schedule, with most interactions expected to be informal.

“Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, Offers JD(S) Four Seats in Karnataka, Says BJP Veteran”

BENGALURU – In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially confirmed its pre-poll alliance with the Janata Dal (Secular) led by former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka. The announcement was made by former Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa, a prominent BJP leader, and parliamentary board member.

As part of this strategic understanding, the JD(S) is set to contest in four Lok Sabha constituencies out of Karnataka’s 28. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has endorsed this arrangement, solidifying the partnership.

“This alliance strengthens us significantly, and we aim to secure victory in 25 to 26 Lok Sabha seats collectively,” stated Yediyurappa during a press conference held in Bengaluru.

This announcement marks a sharp shift from JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda’s earlier indications of contesting the Lok Sabha elections independently.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP emerged triumphant by securing 25 seats, with an independent candidate supported by the party clinching one seat. Meanwhile, the Congress and JD(S) jointly secured one seat each in Karnataka.

Stay tuned for further updates as this alliance sets the stage for a fierce political battle in Karnataka in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

North Indian Gang Arrested for ATM Thefts in Khammam; 34 ATM Cards and Cash Seized

0

The Khammam police apprehended a northern Indian gang involved in stealing money from ATMs, resulting in the seizure of 34 ATM cards and Rs 15,000 in cash.

According to a statement by Inspector of Police Swamy from the one-town area, the gang, consisting of three members hailing from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended jointly by the one-town and CCS police on Wednesday.

The accused individuals, identified as Waris from Haryana, Nishad Radheshyam, and Nishad Sanjay from Uttar Pradesh, were captured by the police based on a tip-off that they were engaged in a cash withdrawal operation at an ATM located on the railway station road. It was later revealed that the gang had previously committed ATM thefts in the city, the CI explained.

The gang’s modus operandi involved opening bank accounts under the names of individuals from various locations, including Piproli village in Haryana, Butpurthanda Jalala, Kurara Thana, Bhamili post, and Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh, and depositing sums ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 into each account.

Subsequently, the gang members would obtain the ATM cards belonging to these account holders to carry out their thefts. Their technique entailed blocking the cash from being dispensed by the ATM with their hands until only a minimal amount was visible. They would then retrieve the money after hearing two beeps.

This method allowed them to secure the cash from the machine while causing the ATM to produce a transaction failure receipt for the concerned customer. The gang would then contact the bank’s customer care, reporting the issue, and the cash would be credited back to their accounts within 15 days, clarified the CI.

The Delhi Metro has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, as incidents of public displays of affection, social media content creation, and filming inside the metro cars have stirred public debate. In response to these incidents, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has issued an advisory, urging passengers not to engage in activities that inconvenience fellow commuters.

Despite the advisory, it appears that some passengers in Delhi continue to disregard it, as a recent viral video has gained widespread attention across various social media platforms.

In the video, two women can be seen engaged in a heated argument inside the train. One of them is dressed in black traditional attire, while the other is wearing yellow. Despite the presence of a policewoman and onlookers attempting to mediate, the woman in black remained steadfast, declaring, “My father is a judge, and I won’t let you go,” while the other woman maintained her innocence.

Even after the woman in yellow tried to defuse the situation, the woman in black persisted in her threats.

The altercation finally came to an end when the policewoman intervened, instructing both women to exit the train when it arrived at a station.

This viral video, originally posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), has garnered significant attention and raised concerns about the conduct of passengers within the Delhi Metro system.

In a recent development following the controversy sparked by DMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayindhi Stalin’s remarks on Sanatana Dharma, former union minister A Raja has escalated the discourse by comparing it to ‘HIV or Leprosy.’ This inflammatory statement has ignited a fresh wave of debate and discussion.

During a public event, A Raja stated, “Udayanidhi Stalin spoke about Sanatan in a soft tone and compared it to Malaria and Dengue. But there is no social stigma to those, no abomination from the society. So, it should be seen as HIV or Leprosy. It should be seen like a social evil disease.”

Raja went on to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to an open debate on the subject. He said, “You come with 10 lakh or 1 crore supporters consisting of Shankaracharya, priests, and with all your weapons to have a discussion on Sanatana Dharma with me in Delhi. I will face you only by having Periyar and Ambedkar books as my weapons. Fix the date and I am ready to come.”

This provocative statement by A Raja has intensified the ongoing controversy surrounding the remarks made by political leaders regarding Sanatana Dharma, raising questions about the boundaries of political discourse and religious sensitivities in the country.
