Hyderabad, November 9: In a major operation, Hyderabad’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) dismantled an international human trafficking and prostitution racket allegedly run by Bangladeshi nationals in the Lakdi ka pul area. The police raided Hotel Akshaya on Saturday, apprehending two key organizers and a customer, while successfully rescuing three women from various parts of India.
The accused, identified as Saleem Mondal and his wife Maria Inchem, were reportedly managing the illegal operation. According to DCP (Women Safety Wing) D. Kavitha, Saleem was linked with a trafficker named Suman Kumar, also known as Ravi Kumar, who facilitated the smuggling of women from Bangladesh into India for exploitation.
This incident is not isolated; Hyderabad has witnessed a surge in similar cases of international trafficking and prostitution over recent years. Authorities have uncovered multiple rings operated by organized networks involving Bangladeshi nationals. Since 2022, Hyderabad police have reportedly busted over a dozen such trafficking operations across the city, rescuing numerous women and arresting several perpetrators involved in these cross-border syndicates.
During Saturday’s raid, three victims—hailing from Assam, West Bengal, and Manikonda, Hyderabad—were rescued. All have been relocated to a rehabilitation facility where they will receive support and assistance in their recovery.
The Hyderabad police continue to intensify their efforts to dismantle these trafficking networks and safeguard vulnerable individuals, particularly through proactive measures in known hotspots.
Dhanbad, Jharkhand, November 9: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a strong criticism of the BJP-led Central government, accusing it of creating a tax structure that disproportionately impacts the poor. Speaking at a rally in Dhanbad, Gandhi claimed that the Indian tax system is designed to “loot the poor,” with policies favoring wealthy industrialists over ordinary citizens.
“The Indian tax system today is designed to take from the poor and give to the rich,” said Gandhi, referencing billionaire Gautam Adani. He alleged that land in Dharavi, valued at Rs 1 lakh crore, is being handed over to Adani, highlighting a stark contrast in tax burdens.
Gandhi also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, suggesting that while Modi “travels in seaplanes and makes grand speeches,” ordinary people, especially women, are hit hardest by rising prices. “Our mothers and sisters bear the brunt of GST on everyday items,” he said, adding that the tax system serves as a means to “extract money from the poor.”
The Congress leader addressed issues faced by tribal communities, noting that the government refers to them as “forest dwellers” instead of “tribals,” diminishing their ancestral rights to land and resources. He emphasized the Congress’s stance that tribal communities should have the first rights to forest, water, and land resources, rather than watching them slip away.
Gandhi further criticized Modi for not engaging with marginalized communities, alleging he “attends the weddings of industrialists’ families” but “never reaches out to Dalits or tribals.” He promised that if elected, the Congress would prioritize a caste census and remove the 50 percent cap on reservations to ensure fair representation in government jobs and institutions. In Jharkhand, he vowed to allocate 28% reservation to tribals, 12% to Dalits, and 27% to backward classes.
Reiterating the INDIA bloc’s seven guarantees for Jharkhand, Gandhi pledged measures to support local communities, including food security with subsidized gas cylinders at Rs 450 and 7 kg of ration per person, a women’s honorarium of Rs 2,500, and 10 lakh job opportunities. Additional commitments included increased MSPs for crops, healthcare funding, and a policy based on the 1932 Khatian land records.
The 81-member Jharkhand Assembly elections are scheduled for November 13 and 20, with results expected on November 23.

Peshawar, November 9, 2024 — A devastating bomb blast at the Quetta railway station in Pakistan claimed the lives of at least 20 people and left 30 others injured early Saturday morning. The explosion occurred in the station’s booking office just moments before a scheduled train arrival, sending shockwaves through the busy area.
According to local media outlet Geo News, the incident took place shortly before the Jaffer Express was set to depart for Peshawar at 9 a.m., as confirmed by railway officials. While the train had not yet reached the platform, the station was bustling with passengers and staff, raising the risk of heavy casualties.
Initial assessments indicate that the blast occurred in an area typically crowded with passengers purchasing tickets, intensifying the tragedy. Emergency response teams and security forces quickly arrived on the scene, cordoning off the area and rushing victims to nearby hospitals.
The explosion has heightened security concerns at Pakistan’s major transportation hubs, where similar attacks have been reported in recent years. Officials are investigating the origins of the explosive device, while medical teams have launched a large-scale emergency operation to treat the injured.
The attack underscores the vulnerability of public spaces to extremist violence, sparking widespread condemnation from local leaders and international observers.
Hyderabad, November 9, 2024 — In a significant crackdown on the illicit trade of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice, the Cyberabad Special Operations Team (SOT) intercepted a truck transporting 22 tonnes of PDS rice in Rajendranagar on Saturday. Acting on specific intelligence, the Rajendranagar unit halted the truck, seizing the entire load and detaining two suspects involved in the smuggling operation.
Upon investigation, the police uncovered that the men had been sourcing PDS rice from economically disadvantaged individuals, purchasing it at minimal prices and then transporting it to Karnataka, where it fetched significantly higher rates. The seized rice, intended as subsidized food for low-income families, was being diverted to unauthorized markets, exploiting the essential commodity for profit.
This case sheds light on a growing trend of PDS rice smuggling from Telangana to neighboring states, where the demand for subsidized rice has driven a black market for illegal trade. Authorities in Telangana and Karnataka have recorded several instances in recent months where rice allocated for the state’s welfare programs was being redirected to private buyers and traders in different regions.
Recent Seizures Highlighting the Rise in Rice Smuggling:
September 2024 – 18 tonnes of PDS rice was seized in Warangal, Telangana, where smugglers were reportedly attempting to transport the load to Maharashtra. Two trucks were intercepted, and arrests were made.
July 2024 – In Nizamabad, Telangana, a truck carrying 15 tonnes of subsidized rice intended for low-income groups was seized en route to Karnataka. Local authorities intensified border checks following this incident.
May 2024 – Authorities in Bidar, Karnataka intercepted a 20-tonne shipment of Telangana PDS rice. This case revealed that the smugglers had been transporting rice across state lines for over six months undetected.
The regular smuggling of essential commodities like PDS rice, meant to alleviate hunger among underprivileged populations, has sparked widespread concern. Critics argue that such illegal trade deprives millions of their food entitlement while enriching smugglers who exploit systemic gaps. Social media reactions echoed a shared sentiment that “even food for the poor has become a commodity in the black market.”
In light of these incidents, Telangana authorities have been urged to tighten border security and enforce stricter controls on PDS distribution. Regular inspections and stringent punishments for offenders are being considered to deter future attempts, ensuring that welfare provisions reach those in genuine need.
Howrah, Kolkata, November 9, 2024 — In an early morning incident, four coaches of the Secunderabad-Shalimar Superfast Express derailed near Nalpur station in West Bengal’s Kharagpur Division, about 40 kilometers from Kolkata. South Eastern Railway confirmed that the derailment occurred around 5:31 a.m. when the train was shifting from the middle to the outer tracks. Fortunately, no casualties or serious injuries were reported.
“A parcel van and two coaches of the 22850 Secunderabad-Shalimar Weekly Express derailed while passing through Nalpur station. As per the initial reports, there have been no major injuries or casualties,” said an official statement from South Eastern Railway.
Following the incident, relief trains and medical assistance from Santragachhi and Kharagpur arrived promptly at the derailment site. In a swift response to the incident, buses were also arranged to transport stranded passengers to their intended destinations, minimizing inconvenience.
The derailment has sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with many Twitter users questioning the frequency of such train accidents. “Train accidents seem to be occurring as frequently as road mishaps. We never saw such incidents earlier,” tweeted one user, expressing frustration toward the Railway Ministry. Comments suggested that buses may need to be stationed near railway tracks in the future to assist passengers during derailments or accidents.
A Growing Pattern of Train Incidents Across India
This derailment adds to a troubling trend of train incidents that have been witnessed across India in recent months. A series of derailments have highlighted concerns over railway safety. Here are some notable cases from the past year:
August 2, 2024 – A passenger train derailed in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, injuring 15 passengers. The incident was attributed to an axle failure.
June 14, 2024 – In Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, two coaches of the Gorakhpur-Lokmanya Tilak Express went off the tracks. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but it disrupted services on the route.
April 28, 2024 – A derailment occurred on the outskirts of Mumbai, where five coaches of the Nanded Express went off the tracks, causing injuries to three passengers.
March 15, 2024 – A freight train derailed in Nagpur, Maharashtra, causing extensive delays for passenger services and raising concerns over track maintenance.
These incidents have fueled calls for more rigorous safety inspections and measures to ensure that train operations remain dependable for passengers across India.

Vijayawada, November 8, 2024 — In a landmark achievement for Andhra Pradesh’s tourism and aviation sectors, a successful trial run of a 14-seater seaplane was conducted on Friday between Vijayawada and Srisailam. This trial, which showcased an innovative travel experience, marks a major step toward launching regular seaplane services in the state.
The seaplane, manufactured by De Havilland Aircraft, embarked on its maiden voyage from Vijayawada’s Prakasam Barrage and landed smoothly on the waters of Srisailam reservoir. After a safe water landing, the seaplane proceeded to the designated area near the Srisailam Tourism Boating Team.
The trial was closely monitored by officials from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, Tourism Department, and Air Force, underscoring the government’s commitment to safety and smooth operations. The official service inauguration will take place on November 9 at Punnamighat, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu scheduled to preside over the launch.
This seaplane initiative, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the State Airports Development Corporation, and the State Tourism Development Corporation, aims to boost tourism in Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to be especially beneficial for devotees traveling to prominent religious sites such as Vijayawada’s Durga Malleswara Swamy Temple and the revered Srisailam Temple.
Originally proposed under the TDP government from 2014 to 2019, the seaplane project faced delays with the subsequent change in administration. However, with the TDP now back in power, efforts to revive and advance the project have accelerated. Expansion plans include further testing in other regions, including Visakhapatnam, Nagarjunasagar, and Godavari, highlighting the government’s vision for widespread seaplane services across the state.
New Delhi, November 8, 2024 — The Supreme Court, in a split 4:3 verdict on Friday, overturned a significant 1967 ruling that had stripped Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) of its minority status. However, a separate three-judge bench is yet to decide if AMU can regain this status.
The landmark ruling was led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, who issued the majority opinion on his final working day. The bench stated that prior assumptions about institutions created by statutes not being eligible for minority status need re-evaluation, especially in AMU’s case. This decision puts the ultimate fate of AMU’s status on hold, pending further review by the new bench.
Chief Justice Chandrachud, along with Justices Sanjiv Khanna, J.B. Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, formed the majority. Meanwhile, Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and S.C. Sharma dissented. The majority opinion stressed examining the origins of AMU to determine if its establishment by a minority community warranted special status under Article 30 of the Constitution.
Key Points in the Majority Opinion
The majority verdict, read by CJI Chandrachud, argued that AMU’s inception and purpose should determine its minority status, not merely the fact that it was legally established through an imperial charter in 1920. According to the court, being founded under British rule does not negate AMU’s potential as a minority institution.
Additionally, the majority opinion stated that minority institutions need not be exclusively managed by members of the founding community. Institutions focusing on secular education could still retain minority character as long as the administration aligns with their identity. The court also upheld the government’s right to regulate minority institutions, provided such regulation does not infringe upon their core character.
Dissenting Views
Justice Dipankar Datta, in his dissent, argued AMU should not qualify as a minority institution, while Justice S.C. Sharma emphasized that control by a minority community is essential for any institution claiming such status. The dissenting judges further highlighted that secular education and minority control are compatible but distinct aspects of such institutions.
Background of the AMU Minority Status Case
AMU, established in 1875 as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College and incorporated in 1920 as a university, initially enjoyed minority status under Article 30, which protects the rights of religious and linguistic minorities to manage educational institutions.
However, in 1951, an amendment to the AMU Act removed mandatory religious instruction for Muslim students. A 1981 amendment aimed to restore AMU’s minority character, but, according to the majority opinion, this attempt was insufficient. In 1967, a five-judge bench ruled that AMU, as a central university, could not claim minority status, sparking a decades-long debate.
During February hearings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that AMU’s substantial reliance on central government funds — with over ₹5,000 crore allocated between 2019 and 2023 — undermined its claim to minority status.
In 2006, the Allahabad High Court dismissed the 1981 amendment, ruling AMU was not a minority institution. This decision was appealed by the then Congress-led UPA government, sending the case to the Supreme Court for further review.
Next Steps: Awaiting the Three-Judge Bench Decision
A final decision on AMU’s minority status now rests with the yet-to-be-constituted three-judge bench, which will evaluate whether the university can indeed claim minority rights. If AMU is deemed a minority institution, it could open the door for up to 50% reservation for Muslim students, thereby enhancing its role in supporting educational opportunities for the Muslim community.
