“Journey to Unite India: Rahul Gandhi’s Train Ride, a Tale of Diversity, and Spreading Love”

New Delhi, Oct 3: Rahul Gandhi, former Congress president, embarked on a train journey from Bilaspur to Raipur, providing him with a unique insight into “real India.” During the two-hour train ride, he encountered moments that reflected the diversity and vitality of the country. The Congress party shared a 13-minute video capturing these encounters, which they described as a continuation of the Bharat Jodo Yatra—an initiative aimed at uniting the nation.

On September 25, Gandhi shared a video of his journey during his visit to Chhattisgarh, where he was accompanied by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

“Transporting crores of people to their destinations, reflecting the diversity of the country, Indian Railways is truly a reflection of India,” remarked the former Congress leader.

In a statement, the party quoted him, saying, “Railways is the lifeline of India in which about 1 crore people travel every day. A glimpse of real India is seen on the train—people of different religions, languages, and classes come together, initially as strangers, but open shops to spread love and unite India.”

Describing the Bilaspur to Raipur journey as “memorable,” Rahul Gandhi shared his interactions with the ambitious youth of Chhattisgarh, particularly promising sportspeople. He met a talented girl from the Dalit community and admired her artwork.

In the video, Rahul Gandhi can be seen engaging with various groups in the train’s sleeper compartments. He interacted with young women table tennis players, hockey players, and kabaddi players. A group of girls even sang the catchy song “Ude jab jab zulfein teri” from the 1957 film “Naya Daur,” starring Dilip Kumar.

Rahul Gandhi referred specific requests from passengers to Chief Minister Baghel, and the journey provided a unique glimpse into India’s diversity, where people of various religions, castes, and classes travel together.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh noted that Rahul Gandhi was continuing the Bharat Jodo Yatra by engaging with people during the train journey. He also highlighted the inspiring stories of girls showcasing their skills in various fields.

Rahul Gandhi’s interactions with different sections of society, from mechanics and porters to students and carpenters, are part of his ongoing initiative to unite the nation, which began with his journey from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.

Media Unites Against NewsClick Raids: A Strong Stand for Press Freedom

“Media Freedom Under Siege: A Battle for the Fourth Estate” – Press Club of India Demands Transparency and Protests Raids

New Delhi, Oct 3: Media organizations joined forces at the Press Club of India to vehemently denounce the recent police raids on journalists associated with the NewsClick portal, characterizing it as yet another attempt to stifle press freedom. Expressing solidarity with the targeted journalists, these bodies condemned what they called a ‘witch-hunt’ by state agencies.

The Press Club of India demanded that the government disclose the specifics of the matter and held an impromptu protest gathering against the multiple raids. Through its X (formerly Twitter) handle, it conveyed that “The meeting resolved to continue protest by several journalists bodies for defending media freedom.”

The Editors Guild of India (EGI) executive committee issued a statement expressing grave concern over the raids conducted at the homes of senior journalists. “Their laptops, mobile phones, and other devices have been seized. Senior journalists have been taken into custody by the Delhi police, allegedly for ‘questioning.’ Media reports suggest that the raids have been widespread,” the statement read.

While acknowledging that the police action was related to a First Information Report registered under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other provisions concerning criminal conspiracy and disruption of communal harmony, the EGI emphasized, “While we recognize that the law must take its course if actual offenses are involved, the due process has to be followed.”

The EGI further added, “The investigation of specific offenses must not create a general atmosphere of intimidation under the shadow of draconian laws, or impinge on the freedom of expression and the raising of dissenting and critical voices. We remind the government of the importance of an independent media in a functioning democracy and urge it to ensure that the fourth pillar is respected, nurtured, and protected.”

The National Alliance of Journalists, the Delhi Union of Journalists, and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (Delhi Unit) also condemned the police raids on individuals such as Bhasha Singh, Urmilesh, Prabir Purkayastha, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Teesta Setalvad, Abhisar Sharma, Aunindyo Chakraborty, Mahesh Kumar, Subodh Varma, Aditi Nigam, Mukund Jha, and others.

In a joint statement, they declared, “We believe that this is yet another attempt by the Centre to muzzle the freedom of the press. Such an action, raiding and intimidating almost all the employees in a media organization, is unheard of. The NewsClick management has been maintaining that whatever funding they have received was through legal sources, and evidence for this has been submitted in the High Court of Delhi. These new raids are to divert public attention from burning livelihood issues of people.”

“Unfortunately, journalists are being targeted for furthering the political agenda of the ruling party. We condemn this with the strongest possible words. We will stand with these journalists in this matter. We urge the Centre to immediately stop this attack on press freedom. We urge the media fraternity to protest against this witch-hunt by the government.

Four Earthquakes Strike Nepal Within an Hour, Sending Tremors Across North India

0

Kathmandu, Oct 3: Nepal experienced a series of four earthquakes within the span of just one hour on Tuesday, with tremors reaching parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR. The two major quakes, measuring 6.3 and 5.3 on the Richter scale, originated in Nepal’s Bajhang district at approximately 2:30 pm local time, triggering a landslide near the epicenter. Subsequently, two additional earthquakes of slightly lower magnitude occurred at 3:06 pm and 3:19 pm.

Online visuals captured the unsettling moment as furniture swayed, and concerned residents rushed out of their homes and workplaces.

The epicenters of these quakes were located in western Nepal’s Bajhang district, causing tremors to ripple through various parts of North India. The most powerful earthquake’s epicenter was situated 206 km southeast of the pilgrimage town of Joshimath in Uttarakhand and 284 km north of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

Reports indicate that the quakes disrupted a major highway in Nepal, affecting an important route to the southern plains, as confirmed by Rama Acharya, an official from the interior ministry.

The seismic activity resulted in injuries and damage. One individual was injured by a falling object, and some houses collapsed in Chainpur town. Additionally, a student sustained injuries in Achham district, reportedly after jumping from a two-story building out of panic. At least five people were admitted to District Hospital Bajhang following the earthquakes.

Local authorities reported damage to the Bajhang district police office building and several houses displaying structural cracks.

While the tremors were strongly felt in neighboring India, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage. According to National Centre for Seismology scientist Sanjay Kumar Prajapati, “In the Delhi region, the magnitude was 3…We have received responses from people that it was felt in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Lucknow region, Jaipur region. A few people in Ahmedabad region are also telling us that they felt it there.”

Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) Issues Strong Statement Condemning BJP Government’s Assault on Media

Press Release: Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) Condemns BJP Government’s Latest Assault on Media Freedom: UAPA’s Net on Indian Journalists

New Delhi, October 3: The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) parties have expressed their strong condemnation of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government’s latest assault on the media. They assert their unwavering support for the media and the constitutionally protected freedoms of speech and expression.

Over the past nine years, the BJP government has been accused of targeting and stifling the media, deploying investigative agencies against prominent media outlets such as the British Broadcasting Corporation, Newslaundry, Dainik Bhaskar, Bharat Samachar, the Kashmir Walla, and the Wire, among others. Most recently, journalists from NewsClick have faced similar challenges.

Critics argue that the BJP government has attempted to transform the media into a mouthpiece for its partisan and ideological interests, facilitating takeovers of media organizations by crony capitalists. Both the government and ideologically aligned groups have allegedly resorted to reprisals against individual journalists who have dared to speak truth to power.

Moreover, the BJP government’s introduction of regressive policies like the Information Technology Rules 2021 has been accused of restricting the media’s ability to report objectively. Critics suggest that these actions not only conceal the government’s actions from the Indian public but also jeopardize India’s global reputation as a mature democracy.

The coercive actions of the BJP government are seen by some as primarily targeting media organizations and journalists who challenge those in power. Paradoxically, critics argue that the government has been passive in addressing journalists who incite hatred and divisiveness within the nation.

In the best interests of the nation, INDIA calls upon the BJP government to shift its focus towards addressing genuine concerns facing the nation and its citizens, rather than targeting the media to divert attention from its perceived failures.

Delhi Police Investigates NewsClick Case: Visit Sitaram Yechury’s Residence

0

New Delhi, Oct 3: A team from the Delhi Police’s Special Cell paid a visit to the residence of CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday as part of their investigation into the NewsClick case. They questioned the son of his staffer, Sri Narayan, who is employed by NewsClick, the media outlet accused of receiving funds from China.

Sources reveal that Special Cell officers seized Sunmit Kumar’s mobile phone, laptop, and hard drive during their visit.

Yechury clarified that the searches were not directed at him or the CPI(M) but were related to the son of one of his staff members.

On Tuesday morning, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell conducted searches at over 30 locations in the national capital, including NewsClick’s premises and the residences of its journalists, in response to the accusations.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.

During the raid, Special Cell officers collected electronic evidence, laptops, mobile phones, pen drives, and extracted data from hard disks at the NewsClick office and from journalists associated with the organization, including Bhasha Singh, Abhisar Sharma, and Sanjay Rajoura, among others.

The residences of NewsClick writers Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and Urmilesh were also subjected to searches.

In response to the searches, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized the government, stating, “Shocked to learn of the raids on 30 journalists in Delhi and arrests of several of them. These are not the actions of a ‘mother of democracy’ but of an insecure and autocratic state.”

“Why does a government as strong and authoritarian as this one feel threatened by a news website? And that too, one that is not even ranked very high in reach or readership? Intolerance is unworthy of everything that India represents. The government has disgraced itself and our democracy today,” Tharoor added in a post on X.

Delhi Police Conducts Early Morning Raids on Journalists and Commentators Linked to Newsclick, Citing “Related to” UAPA

0

Delhi , Oct 3-23 : In a startling turn of events, Delhi police has launched a series of early morning raids targeting the residences of prominent journalists and commentators associated with the news outlet Newsclick. The operations, conducted in connection with FIR number 224/2023, are allegedly linked to “related to” the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The case, which was registered against Newsclick on August 17, 2023, references several sections of the UAPA, including 13, 16, 17, 18, and 22, alongside 153(a) (promoting enmity between different groups) and 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

While official statements remain elusive, the raids this morning bear eerie similarities to the 1975 Emergency period, as several newspersons were targeted. Among the individuals subjected to these early morning raids are video journalist Abhisar Sharma, senior journalist Bhasha Singh, veteran journalist Urmilesh, Newsclick editor Prabir Purkayastha, writer Githa Hariharan, renowned journalist and political commentator Aunindyo Chakravarty, activist and historian Sohail Hashmi, and satirist Sanjay Rajaura.

Prabir Purkayastha was reportedly taken from his home to the Newsclick office and later to the Special Cell headquarters. Sources indicate that around 15 police personnel arrived at his residence between 6:30 and 7 am, confiscating all electronic devices without providing any documentation.

The raids seem to have extended to the homes of past and present Newsclick journalists, contributors, and employees, including former Hindu journalist and Newsclick contributor Anuradha Raman, Satyam Tiwari, Aditi Nigam, and Sumedha Pal. Satyam Tiwari has been detained.

Activist Teesta Setalvad and veteran journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta also had their homes raided. Teesta Setalvad, who resides in Mumbai, is currently being questioned by Delhi police officers. Setalvad is the director of the think tank Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, which has contributed articles to Newsclick. Journalist Subodh Verma, formerly with the Times of India and now associated with Newsclick, was also a target of the raids.

Notably, Urmilesh, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Abhisar Sharma, Prabir Purkayastha, and Satyam Tiwari have been confirmed to have been taken to the special cell headquarters for questioning, with lawyers reportedly denied access to them.

Earlier in the morning, police visited the homes of Newsclick employees across various roles and levels, seizing their electronic devices and inquiring about their reporting on events such as the farmers’ protest and the COVID pandemic in India.

As of this report, Delhi police are continuing their questioning, and sources suggest that scientist and writer D. Raghunandan, associated with the Delhi Science Forum, has also been “taken away by the police.” Several individuals have reported the confiscation of their devices, laptops, and phones.

Journalist Bhasha Singh and cartoonist Irfan K both took to social media to report the seizure of their devices.

In response to the raids, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur asserted that “probe agencies are independent and they are doing their jobs by following rules.” He stated that there is no need to justify the raids and that action can be taken if “money has come from wrong sources or something objectionable has been done.”

Gaurav Yadav, the legal representative for Urmilesh, he informed PTI that he has been unable to have a meeting with his client since this morning.

The current FIR appears to be rooted in an August report by the New York Times, which was cited by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey in the Lok Sabha to allege that Congress leaders and Newsclick had received funds from China to create an “anti-India” atmosphere.

The Press Club of India has expressed concern about the raids and plans to release a detailed statement regarding the situation.

Chief Minister Approves New Pay Revision Committee for Telangana State

0

Hyderabad, Oct-2, 2023 : In a significant development today, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao granted his approval for the establishment of a new Pay Revision Committee (PRC). This committee, tasked with revising pay scales for state government employees and pensioners, will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the workforce in Telangana.

The newly appointed PRC will be led by retired IAS officer N Sivashankar, with another retired IAS officer B Ramaiah serving as a member. Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari issued the official orders for this crucial initiative.

In a show of goodwill towards government employees and pensioners, the State government simultaneously announced a five percent interim relief (IR). This relief will provide much-needed financial support to employees and pensioners while the PRC diligently crafts its recommendations.

The primary mission of the committee is to propose revised pay scales within a tight timeframe of six months. To facilitate the smooth functioning of the PRC, the Finance department has been directed to allocate the necessary funds and personnel.

The PRC’s comprehensive review will encompass a thorough analysis of the current pay scales of Telangana employees in comparison to their counterparts in other states and the Government of India. Factors such as State Revenue growth, government commitments to ongoing and future investments, development programs, and welfare schemes will also be taken into consideration.

This announcement comes as a fulfillment of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s assurance to government employees and pensioners, made during a recent discussion in the Assembly. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equitably distribute the benefits of the State’s economic development among all sections of society, including its dedicated employees. Chief Minister Rao hinted at an “unbelievable” increase in salaries under the forthcoming PRC, following the BRS government’s remarkable 70 percent salary hike over the past nine years. “Telangana Congress Chief Revanth Reddy Takes on BRS Ministers, Challenges Them to Public Debate”

0

“Revanth Reddy’s Bold Defense and Counterattack Amidst Political Sparring”

In a fiery exchange of words, Telangana Congress President A. Revanth Reddy has firmly dismissed the recent criticism from BRS Ministers K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao regarding the Congress party’s six guarantees. Reddy has not only defended these guarantees but has also dared the ministers to engage in a public debate.

Reddy questioned the logic behind the ministers’ argument that the guarantees should be implemented in all Congress-ruled states before Telangana. He emphasized that the requirements and assurances can vary significantly from state to state. He reminded that even in 2004, when Congress introduced landmark initiatives in combined Andhra Pradesh, such as free power for farmers, Arogyasri, and Fee Reimbursement schemes, these were not replicated in other Congress-ruled states.

During a press conference attended by senior leaders Madhu Yaskhi Goud and Anjan Kumar Yadav, Reddy stated, “The ministers’ argument regarding the implementation of guarantees only exposes their political shallowness. The people are aware that when Congress makes promises, it fulfills them.”

Revanth Reddy further took on the claims made by the BRS ministers about their party’s contributions to the state. He offered to compare their party’s manifestos from 2014 and 2018 with their actual achievements, asserting, “We implemented several schemes when state revenues were significantly lower, and the BRS couldn’t sustain schemes like Fee Reimbursement or Arogyasri. No one will believe if the BRS introduces new schemes.”

Reddy expressed bewilderment at the BRS party’s concerns about Congress promoting multiple leaders and providing opportunities to marginalized sections. He questioned, “Why is the BRS worried about strong leaders within Congress and everyone having political opportunities? We are not a dynastic party like the BRS, where only KCR, KTR, or someone from his family leads the party indefinitely.”

Additionally, Revanth Reddy labeled Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Telangana as a “BRS promotion tour.” He alleged that the Prime Minister’s visit aimed to divide anti-incumbency voters and assist the BRS in the upcoming elections. Reddy pointed out that the Prime Minister did not provide assurance of national status for the Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS) nor made any new announcements. He dismissed the Prime Minister’s reaffirmation of commitments like the Tribal University and Turmeric Board as old assurances.

Reddy also raised questions about Prime Minister Modi’s silence on Chief Minister KCR’s alleged corruption, despite making such allegations in the past. He suggested that this silence indicated a close relationship between the two parties and their leadership.

Amritsar Oct -2-23 : Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, embarked on a day-long “personal, spiritual visit” to Amritsar, where he paid a visit to the revered Golden Temple. During his visit, he immersed himself in the spiritual ambiance, listening to the Gurbani Kirtan, and actively participated in sewa, or community service.

Donning a blue scarf on his head, Rahul Gandhi humbly washed dishes as part of his volunteer service, joining others in contributing to the community at the Golden Temple.

Local Congress leaders confirmed that Rahul Gandhi would spend the night in the city.

Punjab Congress president Raja Waring took to X earlier in the day, stating, “Shri @RahulGandhi ji is coming to Amritsar Sahib to pay obeisance at Sachkhand Shri Harmandir Sahib. This is his personal, spiritual visit, let’s respect his privacy. Request all party workers to not be physically present for this visit.
