New Study Suggests the Moon is 4.46 Billion Years Old

0

A recent study has extended the estimated age of the Moon to at least 4.46 billion years, which is 40 million years older than previously believed. This research, published in the journal Geochemical Perspectives Letters, aimed to uncover the precise age of the Moon by analyzing lunar samples brought back to Earth by Apollo astronauts in 1972.

The Moon’s origin is closely linked to a cataclysmic event over four billion years ago during the early stages of our solar system. A collision between a Mars-sized object and Earth led to the formation of the Moon, with the largest fragment becoming our celestial companion. Despite this theory, the exact timing of this collision has remained a mystery.

To pinpoint the age of the Moon’s formation, the researchers turned to tiny crystals found within the lunar samples. These crystals, referred to as zircon crystals, are among the oldest known solid materials that developed after the monumental impact. Their age served as a crucial reference point for establishing a lunar chronology.

Philipp Heck, a professor at the University of Chicago and the senior author of the study, explained, “These crystals are the oldest known solids that formed after the giant impact. And because we know how old these crystals are, they serve as an anchor for the lunar chronology.”

The researchers utilized a groundbreaking analytical technique called atom probe tomography, which allowed them to accurately date the lunar crystal. By studying the decay of atoms within the zircon crystals, they could determine their age. When certain atoms, like uranium, undergo radioactive decay, they transform into different elements, such as lead. By examining the ratio of these isotopes, scientists can ascertain the age of the crystal.

Jennika Greer, the lead author of the study and a research associate at the University of Glasgow, UK, described the process: “In atom probe tomography, we start by sharpening a piece of the lunar sample into a very sharp tip, using a focused ion beam microscope, almost like a very fancy pencil sharpener. Then, we use UV lasers to evaporate atoms from the surface of that tip. The atoms travel through a mass spectrometer, and how fast they move tells us how heavy they are, which in turn tells us what they’re made of.”

This method allowed scientists to determine that the zircon crystals on the Moon’s surface must have formed after the lunar magma ocean had cooled, as the extreme heat during the initial impact would have melted any existing crystals. Consequently, these findings provide valuable insights into the Moon’s early history and the formation of our nearest celestial neighbor.

Kottayam : Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor criticized the circulation of cropped images that depicted him with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, denouncing it as an act of “cheap politics.” Tharoor expressed his frustration with being targeted through the dissemination of edited photos taken during a function.

Tharoor stated, “My life is dedicated to the people. These types of trolls are a part of cheap politics. In my opinion, this is not a serious issue. It was her birthday party, in which around 15 people, including my sister, participated.”

Mahua Moitra, also displeased with the images, accused the BJP troll sena of circulating them on social media. She humorously commented, “Most amused to see some personal photos of me being circulated on social media by @BJP4India’s troll sena. I like the green dress better on me than the white blouse. And why bother cropping – show the rest of the folks at dinner as well. Bengal’s women live a life. Not a lie.”

In a related development, BJP Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accusing the TMC member of a “serious Breach of Privilege,” “Contempt of the House,” and a “criminal offence under Section 120A of IPC” in a case titled “Re-emergence of nasty ‘Cash for Query’ in Parliament.”

In his complaint to the Lokpal, Dubey alleged that Mahua Moitra received Rs 2 crores in cash from businessman Darshan Hiranandani, both in Indian and foreign currencies, in exchange for posing questions in Parliament. He further claimed that the businessman used the Lok Sabha login credentials of the TMC MP while she was traveling abroad.

Hiranandani later submitted a “sworn” and notarized affidavit to the Ethics Committee of Lok Sabha, claiming that Moitra provided him with her “Parliament login and password” to post questions on her behalf when necessary.

In response to the affidavit, Moitra raised questions about its authenticity, noting that it was on white paper and lacked an official letterhead or notarization. She suggested that the businessman might have been coerced into making such claims.

Noida Residents’ Body to Challenge Nithari Serial Killings Acquittal in Supreme Court

0

Noida : The District Development Residents Welfare Association (DDRWA) of Noida has declared its intention to challenge the recent acquittal of domestic help Surendra Koli and his employer Moninder Singh Pandher in the infamous 2006 Nithari serial killings case. The Allahabad High Court’s verdict, which acquitted the accused, has prompted this move, and the DDRWA is taking steps to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.

DDRWA has initiated consultations with legal experts and held meetings with the families of the victims to strategize the way forward. The association has committed to supporting the legal expenses for the case in the Supreme Court.

N P Singh, President of DDRWA, stated, “Initially, we contemplated providing financial assistance to the victim families. However, after extensive deliberations, it was decided that we would take up the case and bear the legal costs required for pursuing justice in the Supreme Court.”

He further added, “We have obtained consent from the victim families and are currently working closely with legal experts who are thoroughly analyzing the Allahabad High Court’s verdict. Their expertise will guide us in formulating our approach. We are optimistic about filing our petition in the Supreme Court within a week.”

Ashok, one of the affected parents who lost his five-year-old son in the Nithari serial killings, expressed his support for DDRWA’s initiative, saying, “I have given them my approval to pursue this case in the highest court. The outcome remains to be seen.”

Moninder Singh Pandher, a businessman previously arrested in connection with the case, was released from Luksar jail in Greater Noida on Friday after the Allahabad High Court acquitted him and his domestic help, Koli. The high court’s decision was based on the observation that the prosecution failed to establish guilt “beyond reasonable doubt” and cited issues with the initial investigation.

The two individuals had faced charges of rape and murder and were originally sentenced to death by a lower court in connection with the Nithari serial killings in Noida. The case had shocked the nation due to the horrific details of sexual assault, brutal murders, and indications of potential cannibalism.

“Only 50 out of 11,051 Private Schools in Telangana Submit Annual Administration Reports”

0

In a startling revelation, it has come to light that just 50 out of the 11,051 private schools in Telangana have complied with the mandate to submit their annual administration reports. These reports, which include crucial fee collection details, were expected to be filed with the School Education Department by September 30.

The reports, required to be audited by a chartered accountant, should contain comprehensive information about fee collection, staff salary expenditures, and other facilities. To date, the majority of submissions have come from smaller budget schools, numbering just 50. This situation has prompted discussions about potential special measures to ensure compliance among the remaining institutions.

Un-aided private schools in Telangana have been granted the authority to set their fee structures, with the involvement of parents nominated by the District Educational Officer on the school governing body. When establishing these fee structures, schools are advised to take into account factors such as staff salaries, building rent and maintenance, and classroom requirements.

The prescribed allocation of fees mandates that 50% be dedicated to staff salaries, while 15% each should be allocated for maintenance, developmental activities, and staff benefits like gratuity and provident fund. Importantly, schools are instructed to reserve only 5% of the fee collection as personal income.

A critical decision, whether or not to make these reports public, rests with the State government. Furthermore, sources reveal that some schools have requested exemption from commercial rates for electricity and property tax, citing their revenue and expenditure. It is reported that these institutions are advocating for domestic rates for both electricity and property tax. Ultimately, the government’s stance on this matter may hinge on the reports submitted by the schools.

Karnataka Government Allows Hijab in Competitive Exams.

0

In a significant announcement, the Karnataka government has granted permission for students to wear hijab during competitive exams, reigniting a contentious debate that emerged last year.

The decision to allow hijab in competitive exams has faced opposition from pro-Hindu groups, led by Karnataka Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar, who have threatened to stage protests in response to the ruling.

Minister Sudhakar has staunchly defended the government’s decision, underlining the importance of personal freedom and choice in a secular country like India. He also reassured that students wearing hijab will be subject to thorough checks, necessitating their arrival at the exam center at least an hour before the commencement of the exam, a procedure akin to the NEET entrance examination.

Sudhakar criticized the protesters, highlighting that their actions potentially infringe on the rights of others and reiterated that India upholds its secular values.

The controversy over students wearing hijab initially flared up in January 2022 when Muslim schoolgirls at Udupi Women’s Pre-University college attended classes while wearing the headscarf.

Potential Discovery of World’s Largest Crater in New South Wales, Australia

Scientists Explore a Gigantic Impact Site with Possible Global Consequences

In a groundbreaking study, scientists are now speculating the existence of what could be the largest crater in the world, nestled in southern New South Wales, Australia. The immense crater, believed to be approximately 520 kilometers in diameter, hints at a catastrophic asteroid impact event that could have triggered a devastating ice age, wiping out an astonishing 85% of Earth’s species.

Located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, this potential impact crater dwarfs the one left by the asteroid responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs. Situated near the town of Deniliquin, the crater remains hidden beneath layers of sediment deposited over millions of years.

A recent publication in the journal Tectonophysics has unveiled the staggering scale of this structure, estimated to reach up to 520 kilometers in diameter, setting a new benchmark in the field. To provide a perspective, the Chicxulub crater, widely associated with the extinction event that annihilated the dinosaurs, measures a mere 150 kilometers in width.

Lead author and adjunct professor at the University of New South Wales, Andrew Glikson, posits that the colossal asteroid responsible for this event likely struck Earth roughly 420 million years ago, accentuating the profound impact this discovery holds for the scientific community and beyond.

Furthermore, this monumental impact is theorized to have ushered in a new ice age, resulting in the catastrophic loss of up to 85% of the Earth’s species during that era.

Dr. Glikson emphasized, “It is enormous, that’s what struck me. If it’s true, it’s the largest impact structure not just in Australia but anywhere.”

Nevertheless, not all experts are entirely convinced that the structure beneath Deniliquin is unequivocally an asteroid crater. Louis Moresi from the Australian National University suggests that an alternate explanation could be the collision of two landmasses, resembling the formation of a mountain range.

While Moresi remains cautious, he acknowledged the compelling arguments put forth by the research team, stating, “They’ve yet to convince me [it’s a crater], but they did make a pretty good case. The other possibility is that it’s a big, curved structure, similar to how Switzerland looks like a big croissant as Italy crashes into the middle of Europe and creates that large, curved structure. If you left that for 500 million years, it would be very hard to distinguish it from the rim of a crater or a collision.”

Ghar Wapasi ! Telangana BJP Leader Raj Gopal Reddy Mulls Return to Congress

0

Hyderabad: BJP leader and former MLA Komatireddy Raj Gopal Reddy is contemplating a return to the Congress party ahead of next month’s Assembly elections.

Sources indicate that he may formally rejoin the Congress party in Delhi within the next few days, with Rahul Gandhi expected to be present for the occasion.

While Reddy acknowledges the pressure from people urging him to rejoin the Congress, he maintains that he has not made a final decision yet.

Reddy had left the Congress to join the BJP in August of last year. The MLA from Munugode also resigned from the Assembly, necessitating a by-election. He entered the bypoll as a BJP candidate but suffered a defeat. Raja Gopal Reddy, the brother of Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, expressed dissatisfaction with the BJP leadership and was one of the leaders who called for the removal of Bandi Sanjay as the party’s state president.

Former MP from Bhongir, Raj Gopal Reddy was recently appointed as a member of the national executive of the BJP. However, he has not been actively participating in the party’s programs for the past few months. Reportedly, he was keen on contesting the upcoming Assembly election from the LB Nagar constituency. His name was conspicuously missing from the BJP’s initial list of candidates announced on Sunday.

The industrialist-politician had joined the BJP amid much fanfare at a public meeting in Munugode in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in August.

However, after the defeat in the Munugode bypoll, Raja Gopal Reddy was not feeling comfortable in the BJP. With the Congress experiencing a resurgence in Telangana after its victory in Karnataka elections and several leaders from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and BJP switching loyalties to the Congress party in recent months, Raja Gopal Reddy also seems to be leaning towards a return to the Congress camp.

In a detailed statement, Tadimalla highlighted that she had tagged BJP National President J P Nadda and the party’s Tamil Nadu Chief K Annamalai, among others, in her social media post to draw attention to her decision. She alleged that a particular individual had “swindled her of her money, property, and documents.”

Tadimalla expressed her profound disappointment, stating, “…not only do I not have any support from the party and its leaders, but it has also come to my knowledge that several among them have been actively helping and supporting the very person who has betrayed my trust and cheated me of my life earnings.”

This development is sure to spark further discussions on the internal dynamics and support systems within political parties, with Tadimalla’s resignation shedding light on the challenges faced by members entangled in legal disputes.
