India’s Growth Rate Imperative for Escaping Lower Middle-Income Status by 2047, Warns Raghuram Rajan

0

Hyderabad : Renowned economist and India’s former Reserve Bank Governor, Raghuram Rajan, delivered a stark warning during a recent event organized by Manthan at Ghulam Ahmed Auditorium in Hyderabad. Rajan emphasized the necessity for India to expedite its economic growth beyond the existing 6% annual rate if it aims to avoid lingering in the lower-middle-income category by 2047, marking the conclusion of the Amrit Kaal period.

Rajan pointed out that sustaining a 6% growth rate, without corresponding population growth, would lead to a doubling of per capita income every 12 years. However, even with this growth, India, currently with a per capita income of around $2,500, is projected to retain its lower middle-income status by 2047. The economist highlighted a troubling trend in certain southern states where population growth is falling below the reproduction rate, resulting in an overall economic slowdown and an aging population.

Expressing apprehension, Rajan stated that the existing growth trajectory is inadequate to absorb the rising workforce and achieve prosperity before India’s population ages. He stressed the urgency of faster economic growth to counter the dual challenge of an aging population and limited economic resources.

In summary, Raghuram Rajan’s insights underscore the critical significance of accelerating India’s economic growth beyond the 6% annual threshold. This proactive approach is essential to break free from the lower middle-income trap and effectively address the challenges posed by demographic shifts. By implementing measures to stimulate growth and ensuring inclusive development, India can carve out a prosperous future for its citizens and unlock its full potential.

Alleges Amit Shah and BJP’s Habit of Seeking Votes by Derogatory Remarks against Congress and Nehru

New Delhi : Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for not addressing Parliament regarding the serious security breach on December 13. Kharge, speaking at the party headquarters, accused Shah and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining the contributions of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi to gain political mileage.

Expressing concern over the lack of focus on the security breach issue, Kharge stated, “We have repeatedly requested the Home Minister to provide a statement in Parliament regarding the security breach. Responding to accusations from Shah and the BJP about politicizing the security breach, Kharge dismissed it as a habitual strategy. He remarked, “It is their habit to accuse Congress and exploit our party’s name for votes, while continuously ridiculing the significant contributions of Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi. We can expect nothing from those who do not value democracy.”

The Parliament has witnessed disruptions for the past two days as the Opposition demands a comprehensive statement from Shah in both Houses. The breach, coinciding with the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, involved individuals jumping from the visitors’ gallery during Lok Sabha proceedings. The ongoing stalemate has led to the suspension of 14 MPs, further intensifying the parliamentary deadlock.

Australia Initiates 3G Network Shutdown, Beginning with Vodafone.

0

In a significant move, Australia has commenced the phase-out of its 3G network, with major telecommunications player Vodafone leading the shutdown on Friday. This marks the initial step in a nine-month timeline during which Australia’s three largest telcos will gradually discontinue their 3G services.

Vodafone, a key player in this transition, revealed that a mere one percent of their total mobile data traffic is currently handled by the 3G network. A substantial 85 percent of data traffic is efficiently managed by the 4G network, while over 13 percent flows through the advanced 5G network.

International media reports confirm Vodafone’s commitment to this transition, emphasizing the diminishing role of the 3G network in handling mobile data. Notably, Vodafone’s 4G coverage is declared to be comparable in size to its soon-to-be-obsolete 3G offering.

Looking ahead, Telstra and Optus, two other prominent telecommunications providers, have outlined their respective timelines for 3G network shutdowns. Telstra plans to conclude its 3G services by June 30, 2024, ensuring comprehensive 4G coverage in all areas previously serviced by 3G. In contrast, Optus, while specifying a September 2024 shutdown date, has not publicly committed to replicating Telstra’s assurance on 4G coverage.

As Australia embraces the evolution of mobile networks, this strategic transition signifies a pivotal moment in the telecommunications landscape, aligning with the increasing prominence of 4G and 5G technologies.
