In a significant political development, Hisar BJP MP Brijendra Singh, son of former Union Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh, announced his resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday. Shortly after his announcement, Brijendra Singh visited the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi to formally join the Congress party.
Brijendra’s decision to leave the BJP comes nearly five months after his father, Birender Singh, issued an ultimatum to the party during a rally in Jind in October 2023. At that time, Birender Singh had threatened to quit the BJP if it continued its alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala in Haryana.
Taking to X on Sunday, Brijendra Singh expressed his reasons for resigning from the BJP, stating, “I have resigned from the primary membership of BJP due to compelling political reasons. I extend gratitude to the party national president Sh. JP Nadda, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, & Sh. Amit Shah for giving me the opportunity to serve as the member of parliament for Hisar.”
Sources close to Birender Singh indicated that he may also join the Congress in the future, possibly through a rally similar to the one he held in 2014 before switching to the BJP. Birender Singh had joined the BJP after leaving the Congress ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election. He was subsequently elected to the Rajya Sabha and appointed as a Union minister.
Birender Singh, known for being the maternal grandson of Sir Chhotu Ram, a respected figure among farmers for his pro-agriculturist stance during the British era, has led the state Congress twice as the president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee.
