On the occasion of Constitution Day, President Droupadi Murmu unveiled a 7-foot-tall statue of Dr BR Ambedkar at the Supreme Court of India. The ceremony, held on Sunday, saw the presence of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and other Supreme Court judges.

The statue, positioned on the front lawn of the Supreme Court premises, depicts Dr Ambedkar in a lawyer’s gown, holding a copy of the Constitution in his hand. The decision to install the statue at the Supreme Court came after a request from a group of Ambedkarite lawyers.

Following the unveiling, both the President and CJI planted trees in front of Dr Ambedkar’s statue, symbolizing a commitment to environmental conservation.

Constitution Day commemorates the formal adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly of India on November 26, 1949, which came into force on January 26, 1950. Dr BR Ambedkar served as the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constitution.

Earlier in the day, political leaders, including Union Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, extended their wishes on social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). Amit Shah emphasized the values and principles of the constitution, urging citizens to fortify its spirit by practicing its values.

Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the significance of the Indian Constitution, prepared under the guidance of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, as the identity of citizens’ rights and responsibilities. The Congress party and Bharatiya Janata Party also shared their wishes on ‘X’, remembering the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949. Constitution Day is also known as Samvidhan Divas or National Law Day.

Additionally, the Bharatiya Janata Party kept its wishes short and simple on ‘X’, stating, “Best wishes to all the countrymen on Constitution Day.” The Congress party, in a separate post on ‘X’, remembered the day and urged people to take a pledge for the constitution.
