Chennai: Tensions between the AIADMK and BJP escalated on Monday as a senior AIADMK leader clarified that there was no existing alliance with the saffron organization. He emphasized that any decision regarding a potential electoral alliance would only be determined during the elections.

Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar criticized BJP state chief K Annamalai for disparaging comments about Dravidian stalwart CN Annadurai and warned that AIADMK members would not tolerate insults to the late chief minister.

Jayakumar pointed out that while Annamalai had made critical remarks about AIADMK leaders, including the late J Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK had requested restraint on the part of the BJP leader.

He stated, “Annamalai doesn’t desire an alliance with AIADMK although BJP workers want it. Should we tolerate all this criticism of our leaders? Why should we carry you? BJP can’t set foot here. Your vote bank is known. You are known because of us.”

Regarding the possibility of an alliance, Jayakumar clarified, “As far as an alliance is concerned, it is not there. BJP is not with AIADMK. (the matter) can be decided only during the election. This is our stand.”

When asked if this was his personal opinion, Jayakumar responded, “Have I ever spoken to you in that capacity? I only talk what the party decides.”
