NASA has unveiled images of the Luna-25 mission crash site, shedding light on the aftermath of the spacecraft’s unexpected lunar impact on August 19.

In a captivating discovery, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft documented a small yet conspicuous new crater, measuring approximately 10 meters in diameter. This impact crater is believed to have formed as a result of the Luna-25 mission’s crash.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) took charge of capturing these fascinating images, comparing the newly obtained images with those captured before the mission’s crash to gain valuable insights into the precise location and characteristics of this crater.

The impact site of the Luna-25 mission is positioned at a latitude of 57.865 degrees south and a longitude of 61.360 degrees east on the lunar surface, sitting at an elevation of approximately minus 360 meters.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) comprises a trio of advanced cameras mounted on the LRO spacecraft, specifically designed to capture high-resolution monochrome images and moderate-resolution multispectral images, providing scientists with invaluable data about the moon’s intricate surface.

NASA’s continuous exploration of the moon’s mysteries and Luna-25’s unexpected impact marks another chapter in humanity’s quest to uncover the secrets of our celestial neighbor.
