San Francisco : X Corp is gearing up to introduce audio and video calls exclusively for its premium, subscription-based users, marking a significant step in its transformation into an “everything app,” confirmed X CEO Linda Yaccarino. Tech veteran-turned-investor Chris Messina recently unveiled new code in the X app that supports audio and video calls, signifying the platform’s ambitious evolution.
The upcoming feature will allow premium users to engage in audio and video calls with other Verified users whom they follow or have in their address book. Messina, discussing the development on X’s rival Threads, emphasized the subscription-based nature of the feature, proclaiming, “You will, of course, have to pay for that feature because Skype is dead.”
The feature’s description promises to “Take messaging to the next level with audio and video calls” and provides the option to select preferred contacts for utilizing this functionality.
X Corp has been undergoing significant changes in recent months, including substantial layoffs and platform modifications. Linda Yaccarino, in her first TV interview as X Corp CEO, revealed that the company is on the verge of breaking even.
She expressed her commitment to transforming X into an “everything app” akin to China’s WeChat. Yaccarino also hinted at upcoming features such as long-form videos, creator subscriptions, and digital payments, suggesting a broader vision for the platform’s future. She stated, “You’ll be able to make video chat calls without having to give your phone number to anyone on the platform,” indicating a focus on user privacy and convenience.
Elon Musk, who recently acquired a significant stake in Twitter, has long envisioned Twitter’s evolution into an “everything app,” similar to China’s WeChat, aligning with the platform’s ever-expanding capabilities.
