Gujarat: In a significant coordinated operation, the Indian Navy, along with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Gujarat Police, intercepted a suspicious boat off the Gujarat coast, leading to the seizure of approximately 700 kilograms of methamphetamine valued at ₹1,700 crore. The operation also resulted in the arrest of eight individuals believed to be linked to an international drug smuggling racket.
A String of Maritime Drug Busts
This marks the second major anti-narcotics operation at sea by the Navy this year. Earlier in July 2024, the Indian Navy and NCB had collaborated to seize 300 kilograms of heroin worth ₹1,500 crore in the Arabian Sea. In that instance, a fishing vessel suspected of being part of a transnational drug network was intercepted, underscoring the increasing use of maritime routes for drug trafficking.
Additionally, in April 2024, the Gujarat ATS (Anti-Terrorism Squad) and Coast Guard conducted a joint operation off the Gujarat coastline, seizing 250 kilograms of heroin worth ₹1,200 crore. The drugs were reportedly being smuggled from Pakistan to India, highlighting the recurring threat of narcotics trafficking in the region.
Details of the Recent Operation
The latest operation underscores the vigilant coordination between the Navy, NCB, and state police forces in combating maritime drug smuggling. Acting on specific intelligence, the agencies tracked the suspicious vessel in Indian waters, leading to its interception. Onboard, officers discovered the massive consignment of methamphetamine, which is known for its devastating effects on communities.
The eight arrested individuals are currently under investigation to determine their links to larger drug cartels and transnational smuggling operations. Authorities believe this bust has dealt a significant blow to the narcotics trade in the region.
Impact and Ongoing Efforts
The series of successful drug busts this year highlights the growing threat posed by international drug networks exploiting India’s vast coastline. These operations also reflect the commitment of Indian enforcement agencies to safeguard the nation from the scourge of drug trafficking.
The Indian Navy, NCB, and other security agencies have ramped up surveillance and intelligence-sharing mechanisms to counter this menace. With drug cartels continually evolving their tactics, authorities stress the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation to dismantle such networks.
