Hyderabad – A government hospital in Telangana’s Peddapalli district faced a dire situation when approximately 400 fever patients descended on the facility within 90 minutes of the start of outpatient services. The Sultanabad hospital, which has only 30 beds, was quickly overwhelmed, with long lines of patients waiting to register for treatment.

The surge in fever cases is part of a broader trend across the region, where hospitals have been grappling with an unprecedented wave of viral infections. On Friday, August 30, the Sultanabad hospital reached its breaking point, with patients waiting in cramped conditions for hours. The overcrowded facility struggled to cope, and the situation deteriorated further when some patients collapsed while waiting in line.

With the hospital unable to accommodate the influx, doctors were forced to advise new arrivals to seek treatment at the district center hospital in Peddapalli. The strain on the healthcare system was evident as Sultanabad’s limited resources were stretched to their limits.

Upon learning of the crisis, Peddapalli’s Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Pramod Kumar, conducted an inspection of the Sultanabad hospital. He attributed the spike in fever cases to the ongoing rainy season, which has been linked to the spread of viral infections throughout the region. Dr. Kumar directed the hospital staff to ensure that all patients received proper treatment and that essential medicines were available despite the overwhelming demand.

The situation at Sultanabad hospital highlights the broader challenges faced by healthcare facilities in the region during this period of heightened viral activity. The rainy season has exacerbated the spread of diseases, placing an extraordinary burden on hospitals already operating with limited capacity.

Meanwhile, the healthcare crisis has been further complicated by a protest among doctors across Peddapalli district. Healthcare workers have halted medical services in response to a series of attacks on doctors, a move that has gained the support of the Indian Medical Association. The strike has added to the challenges faced by the healthcare system, as hospitals struggle to manage the influx of patients while dealing with internal unrest among medical professionals.

The unfolding situation underscores the urgent need for increased resources and support for healthcare facilities in Telangana, particularly during times of seasonal disease outbreaks.
