In a heated political exchange, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of offering “empty envelopes” with regards to his promises, including women’s reservation and a caste-based census. Her comments prompted the BJP to file a complaint. Priyanka Gandhi stated, “I saw on TV – Prime Minister came to Devnarayanji’s temple with an envelope. When it was opened, 21 rupees came out.”
On her WhatsApp channel, she further commented, “From the work they do, it is also seen that Modi ji’s envelope is empty. Women’s reservation, OBC caste census, ERCP are all empty promises because Modiji’s envelope is empty.” The BJP, reacting to these remarks, submitted a complaint to the Election Commission.
The BJP delegation, which included Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and Arjun Ram Meghwal, as well as party leaders Anil Baluni and Om Pathak, urged the Election Commission to take legal action against the Congress general secretary. The BJP’s complaint was centered around Priyanka Gandhi’s statement during a public meeting in Dausa on October 20. She mentioned having seen on TV that when an envelope of donation made by the Prime Minister at a temple was opened, it contained only Rs 21. Priyanka Gandhi clarified that she saw the news and was uncertain about the claim’s authenticity.
The BJP included a video of her remarks in its complaint. Rajasthan is scheduled to hold assembly polls for 200 seats on November 25, with vote counting on December 3. The BJP’s complaint argued that Priyanka Gandhi’s statement violated the fundamental principles of free and fair elections by invoking the personal religious devotion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite her own uncertainty about its accuracy. The BJP contended that her remarks were in violation of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of People Act, as they made false statements that could impact the election’s outcome.
Priyanka Gandhi also shared video on her Facebook wall with the caption, ‘Modi ji ka lifafa khali hai.’
