Ustad Bismillah Khan, born as Qamaruddin Khan, was an iconic Indian musician renowned for his mastery of the shehnai, a reeded woodwind instrument. Hailing from a family of traditional Muslim musicians, Bismillah Khan was born on 21 March 1916 in Dumraon, British India. He was the second son of Paigambar Bux Khan and Mitthanbai. With a rich lineage of musical talent in the family, his two grandfathers, Ustad Salar Hussain Khan and Rasool Bux Khan, were also accomplished musicians in the Dumraon palace. Originally named Qamruddin, his destiny took a melodious turn when his grandfather, Rasool Baksh Khan, upon seeing the newborn, exclaimed “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). From that moment on, the name stuck and became his identity.
