In a groundbreaking achievement, medical teams from Petlaburj Maternity Hospital and Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad collaborated to perform a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy, marking a significant step in gender affirmation for 23-year-old trans male, Sompelly Soni (Yeshwanth Kumar). The procedure involved the removal of the uterus, a pioneering effort in the region.

The surgery, the first stage in the gender affirmation process, was executed successfully at OGH. Following the confirmation of the diagnosis as assigned female at birth with gender dysphoria, the hospital’s endocrinology team initiated hormone replacement therapy for the patient. Superintendent of OGH, Dr. G. Nagender, emphasized the importance of these services, highlighting their absence even in private healthcare facilities in Hyderabad, necessitating patients to travel to other cities.

Dr. Nagender added, “Recently, we launched a transgender clinic at OGH, and such services are vital for the community.” The collaborative effort involved various teams, including Obstetric and Gynecology led by Dr. Malathi, Prof. and Superintendent of Petlaburj Government Maternity Hospital, and the General Surgery team of OGH headed by Dr. Mallikarjun. The anesthesia team, nursing staff, and support personnel were also integral to the success of the surgery.

Dr. G. Nagender assured that proper consent had been obtained from the trans-male, who is currently in the process of recovery. The hospital is committed to providing comprehensive treatment and support services at different stages of the gender transformation process, involving specialty and super specialty teams.
