Antonio Guterres Appeals for the Protection of Civilians in the Israel-Hamas Conflict, Expresses Concern About the Escalation’s Regional Consequences
The United Nations Secretary-General has reiterated his plea for a Gaza ceasefire and has expressed concerns about the breach of international law in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.
Israel has continuously bombarded the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7, following a surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,400 people, according to Israeli authorities.
In the aftermath of the attack, Israel cut off the supply of water, food, fuel, and electricity to Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, a move the UN has labeled as a form of collective punishment. Furthermore, Israel launched an assault on the territory, leading to the deaths of at least 5,791 people, according to authorities in Gaza, which is governed by Hamas.
