In response to escalating traffic congestion in school zones, the Hyderabad Traffic Police has proactively engaged with school managements to introduce staggered timings. The strategic initiative aims to ensure that neighboring schools commence and conclude their daily operations at varying intervals, effectively mitigating the simultaneous influx and outflow of traffic. The successful implementation of this plan holds the promise of reduced traffic chaos, consequently benefiting regular commuters in the vicinity.

The impetus for devising staggered school timings arose from the persistent grievances of everyday commuters, who voiced concerns about prevalent traffic jams and sluggish traffic movements around regions densely populated with educational institutions. Despite the presence of traffic personnel, localities housing multiple schools were plagued by persistent gridlocks, severely hampering traffic flow.

Recently, a constructive dialogue was established with school managements, garnering widespread support for the collaborative effort to minimize inconvenience. “We are optimistic that our proposed measures will take effect by the end of this month,” affirmed G Sudheer Babu, Additional Commissioner of Traffic.

As part of the strategy, schools have been advised to stagger their timings by 15-minute intervals, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. Task forces of traffic officers have already pinpointed specific areas characterized by clusters of schools, where traffic-related challenges manifest frequently. Depending on factors such as traffic density, student population, and the number of vehicles congregating to pick up students, the traffic police intend to categorize school zones into distinct sectors. Recommendations for opening and closing times will then be proposed to school administrations.

The traffic police are advocating for the facilitation of on-site vehicle pick-up within school premises, rather than the prevalent practice of parking outside. In instances where limited open space precludes this approach, measures such as assigning security personnel to regulate road traffic and deploying a small number of traffic officers are being implemented
