
Hyderabad : In a landmark development, Vikarabad MLA G Prasad Kumar has secured a unanimous vote, becoming the first Dalit Speaker of the 3rd Telangana Assembly. Pro-Tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi announced the historic election, revealing that only one nomination was filed for the coveted post, with the support of all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) across party lines.
Before the formal announcement, Pro-Tem Speaker Owaisi administered the oath to Members who were unable to attend the December 9 ceremony, setting the stage for the momentous occasion.
Expressing gratitude to all parties for their bipartisan support, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy acknowledged the unity displayed by members from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), AIMIM, and CPI. The Chief Minister commended Speaker G Prasad Kumar’s political journey, highlighting his diverse roles, including serving as an MPTC, Mandal Praja Parishad, MLA, and Handlooms Minister.
BRS working president KT Rama Rao congratulated the Speaker and commended the swift agreement by BRS Chief K Chandrashekhar Rao to support the unanimous election proposal. The hope is that the new Speaker will continue the legacy set by his predecessors, Madhusudhana Chary and Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, in the Telangana Assembly.
AIMIM MLA Ahmed Bin Balala, CPI MLA K Sambasiva Rao, and Members from Congress and BRS joined in congratulating Speaker G Prasad Kumar on his historic appointment.
Upon assuming the Speaker’s role, G Prasad Kumar welcomed BJP members into the House and administered the oath to them. In his address, the newly elected Speaker emphasized the importance of providing equal opportunities for all Members to voice their opinions and address public concerns, irrespective of party affiliations.
The Assembly has been adjourned, with a scheduled meeting at 11.30 am on Friday for Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan’s address to all Members, including those from the Legislative Council.
