Paris, – In a significant development, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR), a French government watchdog, has issued a directive requiring Apple to remove the iPhone 12 from the market, citing concerns over elevated electromagnetic radiation levels.
The ANFR, responsible for overseeing radio-electric frequencies and monitoring public exposure to electromagnetic radiation, issued a statement on Tuesday, urging Apple to “promptly address this malfunction using all available means.”
The directive goes further to stipulate that corrective updates to the iPhone 12 will be closely monitored by the agency. Should these updates prove ineffective, Apple will be obligated to initiate a recall of previously sold devices, as stated in the directive.
The ANFR conducted a comprehensive assessment of 141 cellphones, including the Apple iPhone 12, to measure electromagnetic wave absorption by the human body. The results revealed that the iPhone 12 recorded an electromagnetic energy absorption level of 5.74 watts per kilogram when the device was tested in hand or pocket, surpassing the European Union’s permissible standard of 4.0 watts per kilogram.
The ANFR also reported that the iPhone 12 met the established threshold for radiation levels when tested in a jacket or bag.
This development places Apple under intense scrutiny, with potential consequences for the iPhone 12’s presence in the European market. The company’s response to these allegations and its actions in addressing the issue will be closely watched by both consumers and regulatory bodies.
