Thiruvananthapuram : In a significant development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala has appointed the distinguished former NSG commando and accomplished filmmaker, Major Ravi, as its Vice President. The announcement was made on Tuesday by state BJP President K Surendran, signifying a strategic move in reinforcing the party’s leadership.
Major Ravi, aged 65, brings a wealth of experience from his commendable service in the Indian Army, notably heading the mission ‘Operation One Eyed Jack,’ aimed at capturing suspects in the assassination case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. His contributions extend beyond the military, as he has made a mark in the Malayalam film industry, creating compelling films inspired by his experiences in the army post-retirement.
A recipient of the President’s Gallantry Award in 1991 and 1992 for combating terrorism in Punjab and Kashmir during his tenure with the National Security Guard (NSG), Major Ravi recently joined the BJP in Delhi. His appointment as Vice President underscores the party’s recognition of his leadership and commitment.
Interestingly, Major Ravi had briefly joined the Congress party in 2021, expressing dissatisfaction with the BJP’s proceedings. However, his return to the BJP fold marks a strategic shift, emphasizing his belief in the party’s vision and leadership under K Surendran.
The BJP’s leadership expansion also includes the induction of C Reghunath, a Congress leader who contested unsuccessfully against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Dharmadom, Kannur, during the 2021 elections. Reghunath, now a BJP member, has been granted a seat in the party’s national council, further enhancing the party’s influence and representation.
Major Ravi’s dual expertise in military service and filmmaking, coupled with his distinguished awards, positions him as a prominent figure in the BJP’s leadership landscape in Kerala. The party aims to leverage his multifaceted background to bolster its presence and resonate with a diverse audience in the state.
