Hyderabad : Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized the party’s historical role in shaping the Constitution and democracy during a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in Hyderabad on Sunday. The extended CWC gathered to strategize for the forthcoming assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Kharge stated, “The Congress has laid the foundation of the Constitution and democracy. Therefore, the responsibility of protecting them also lies with Congress. For this, we will have to fight till our last breath.” He further pointed out that 2024 marks the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi becoming Congress President, and removing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power in the upcoming year would be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Kharge urged party leaders to continuously raise essential issues and expose the shortcomings and anti-people policies of the BJP. He noted, “2023 is the centenary of Congress Seva Dal. Removing BJP from power in 2024 will be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Therefore, we have to continuously raise all the basic issues.”

The extended CWC meeting, attended by chief ministers, state unit chiefs, legislative party leaders, and members of the Working Committee, focused on formulating the party’s election strategy. This planning comes after deliberations on various issues and policies in the preceding days.

Kharge observed that India is eager for a change in leadership, and the signs of this desire are evident. He urged party leaders to work tirelessly and maintain constant communication with voters, countering falsehoods to safeguard India’s democracy from what he termed a “dictatorial government.”

He stated, “The country wants change. The sign is in front of us. Our victory in the recent elections in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh is proof of this. This is not the time to sit back. You will have to work hard day and night.”

Assembly elections in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Mizoram are scheduled towards the end of the year, while the Lok Sabha polls are expected in April-May 2024.

Kharge emphasized that the nation is eagerly awaiting the outcome of the CWC meeting, and he kickstarted discussions on the party’s election strategy. He reminded party leaders of the challenges faced in India’s democratic history and called for unity within the party to protect the Constitution and the rights of marginalized communities.

Kharge also highlighted the party’s extensive preparations at the ground level and the positive atmosphere in favor of Congress across various states.

Party leaders were instructed to maintain continuous contact with voters, respond to their queries, and promptly counter rival falsehoods based on issues and facts.

Kharge concluded with a call for discipline and unity within the party, pointing to the successful unity demonstrated during the Karnataka assembly polls.

The extended Congress Working Committee meeting expressed confidence in receiving a decisive mandate from the people in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Telangana in the upcoming assembly elections. The party also affirmed its readiness for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May 2024.
