Watch the Supreme Court Proceedings on Sanjay Singh’s Bail

Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, marking the end of his six-month detention in the Delhi Excise Policy case. The court’s decision came with a directive for Singh’s release on terms set by the trial court, emphasizing that this ruling doesn’t set a precedent. Notably, Singh is permitted to resume his political engagements.

During the proceedings, the Supreme Court questioned the Enforcement Directorate about the necessity of further custody for Sanjay Singh, highlighting his prolonged detention. The bench sought clarification on whether Singh’s continued custody was warranted. Singh had been arrested last year by the ED in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case.

The apex court entertained Singh’s plea challenging his arrest and remand in the money laundering case. It observed that no money was found in Singh’s possession and suggested that allegations of bribery could be scrutinized during the trial. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the ED, assured to address Singh’s arguments against his arrest and remand.

Singh’s bail plea had earlier been contested by the probe agency in the high court, alleging his involvement in various aspects of the liquor scam. The ED claimed that Singh had benefited from illegal proceeds and played a part in the conspiracy surrounding the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

The ED’s money laundering case, stemming from a CBI FIR, focuses on irregularities in the modification of the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. Both agencies assert that undue advantages were granted to license holders, leading to the initiation of legal proceedings against Singh and others involved in the alleged misconduct.
