President Droupadi Murmu Engages with Pochampally Weavers during Southern Sojourn

Hyderabad :- President Droupadi Murmu took a step closer to India’s rich handloom heritage on Wednesday during her visit to Pochampally in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana. The President interacted with Ikat handloom weavers at the handloom and spinning unit, showcasing her appreciation for the artistry of Pochampally.

During the visit, President Murmu explored the theme pavilion and observed the intricate process of weaving Ikat sarees, a craft for which Pochampally is renowned. She lauded the weavers for their efforts in preserving and passing on this traditional art form to future generations.

President Murmu expressed her commitment to considering the suggestions offered by the weavers, emphasizing that their input would be taken into account for the development of Pochampally. In response to a weaver’s request, she assured her best efforts towards the establishment of a yarn depot in Pochampally, a region distinguished for its unique Ikat sarees.

Pochampally Ikat, recognized with Geographical Indicator (GI Status) in 2004, stands as a symbol of India’s cultural richness. The village was also honored as one of the best tourism destinations by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Arriving at Pochampally via helicopter from her stay at Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad, President Murmu was accompanied by state ministers Tummala Nageswara Rao and Seethakka, along with senior officials. The President’s engagement reflects her dedication to acknowledging and supporting the vibrant heritage of India’s handloom traditions.
