The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Telangana due to the influence of severe cyclonic storm ‘Michaung.’ The IMD expressed concerns over a moderate flash flood risk in specific districts of the state over the next 24 hours, attributing it to the impact of Cyclone Michaung.

As of 8:30 am on Tuesday, Cyclone Michaung was positioned near Latitude 15.2°N and Longitude 80.25°E, approximately 40 km northeast of Kavali, 80 km north-northeast of Nellore, 80 km south-southwest of Bapatla, and 140 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam. The cyclonic storm had hovered over the Westcentral and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal off the southern Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu coasts on Monday.

IMD reports have identified Suryapet, Khammam, and Nagarkurnool as districts at moderate risk for flash floods. In response to the potential threat, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Khammam have been placed on red alert status, signifying an elevated level of caution and preparedness for these areas.

Forecasts suggest that Cyclone Michaung will maintain its near-northward movement, running close to the coast of south Andhra Pradesh. The storm is expected to make landfall near Bapatla in the next four hours, retaining its intensity as a severe cyclonic storm. The maximum sustained wind speed is estimated to be between 90-100 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 110 kmph. The IMD urges residents in the identified districts to exercise caution and stay informed about the evolving weather conditions.
