In a seismic event that sent shockwaves across New Zealand, a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake jolted the South Island today at approximately 9:00 AM local time.
Reports of tremors were not confined to the immediate vicinity of the quake’s epicenter. In fact, people as far north as Auckland, hundreds of kilometers away, reported feeling the ground shake.
